A prize of $1,000 is given annually for a book of fiction or creative nonfiction that focuses on the environment, animal protection, ecology, or wildlife. The winner also receives a four-week residency at PLAYA, a writers and artists retreat located on the edge of the Great Basin near Summer Lake, Oregon. Unpublished manuscripts and books published in the past five years are eligible. Jonathan Balcombe will judge. Using the online submission system, submit a manuscript of 40,000 to 90,000 words or a book published in 2012 or later with a $18 entry fee by December 31. All unpublished entries are considered for publication. Visit the website for complete guidelines.
