Residential fellowships are given annually to fiction writers and creative nonfiction writers to spend an academic semester in residence at the Hans Arnhold Center at the American Academy in Berlin. Fellows receive a $5,000 monthly stipend, lodging, partial board, and round-trip airfare. Writers based in the United States who have published at least one book of fiction or nonfiction are eligible. Submit two writing samples totaling no more than 60 pages, a curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation (sent directly to the Academy by the references) by October 5. Fiction writers should submit an additional writing sample of 15 to 20 pages from a proposed project; nonfiction writers should submit a project proposal of five to seven pages.
