Poets & Writers Theater

Palestinian poet and scholar Mosab Abu Toha reads his poems and discusses his life as a writer in Gaza for this 2021 virtual event moderated by Refqa Abu-Remaileh and hosted by the Literatures of Annihilation, Exile, and Resistance research collective and lecture series. The author of the award-winning book Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear (City Lights Books, 2022) was detained by Israeli Defense Forces while trying to leave Gaza after his home was bombed, and was later released.

“If we are always the threat / To whom or where do we turn for protection?” In this Litquake festival video from 2020, Pamela Sneed reads from her book Funeral Diva (City Light Books, 2020), for which she won the 2021 Lambda Literary Award’s lesbian poetry prize, and speaks with Tommy Pico about breaking apart genres and writing about pandemics.

In this 2016 video, Carmen Giménez Smith reads from a selection of her poems for the Lunch Poems reading series at the University of California in Berkeley. Smith speaks about her fifth book, Cruel Futures (City Lights Books, 2018), in “The Love of Labor, the Labor of Love” by Rigoberto González in the May/June issue of Poets & Writers Magazine.

Juan Felipe Herrera, who has been appointed a second term as poet laureate of the United States, speaks about meeting young poets and reads from his most recent collection, Notes on the Assemblage (City Lights Publishers, 2015), at the 2016 AWP conference and book fair in Los Angeles. 

Jamie FitzGerald, director of Poets & Writers’ Readings & Workshops (West), leads a discussion about resources available to writers in San Francisco, the importance of community, and how various literary communities can support one another. Panelists include Stacey Lewis of City Lights Books, Laura Moriarty of Small Press Distribution, Joyce Jenkins of Poetry Flash, Janis Cooke Newman of the Grotto, and Jason Bayani of Kearny Street Workshop.
