For many writers groups and nonprofit literary organizations battered by the recession, help is on the way. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which was signed into law by president Barack Obama in February, included fifty million dollars in arts funding that is being allocated by the National Endowment for the Arts.

826 Valencia

826 Valencia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. They offer a range of programs, all free of charge, for students, classrooms, and schools in the Bay Area. Their project-based approach allows students ownership over the writing process and strengthens their ability to express themselves clearly and in their own voice.
