Wow. A Decision. [In reply to] Can't Post

I am going to Iowa for fiction.

That means a spot just opened up, minutes ago, at Cornell.
Also, I just took myself off the waitlist at the Michener Center.

I also turned down Michigan, UVA, and U of Arizona.
I was rejected from Brown.

So happy to have decided. If you're going to Iowa, send me a message. Good luck to everyone.

No final decision exactly, but I am sending in my "no" to Emerson. Good news for anyone waiting for a spot w/o funding.

I am currently writing an email accepting a place in UVA's program (for poetry.)

I'm extremely happy.

I've decided not to attend Western Michigan (fiction). I e-mailed them this morning with my decision. Hopefully this will help someone.

New Hampshire [In reply to] Can't Post

I have accepted my admission at the University of New Hampshire. I will contact Pitt soon, so that will open a spot for someone. Thanks! If you're going to UNH too, drop me a PM!

Minnesota [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm mailing in my formal acceptance to the University of Minnesota for poetry today.

I've already contact the other programs regarding this decision, so spots have opened up at the following colleges for poetry: FSU (with TAship), Emerson, Bennington, Vermont College, Pacific University, Antioch, Stonecoast, New England College, Alaska, and Goddard.

I'm so relieved the waiting game is over. I was also on the wait list for the U of MN (the first on the list), and the director said this is the time of year things begin to shuffle, so those on wait lists--hang in there! I never thought the day would come when I would know where I was going next year... this was a long handful of months!

Declining etiquette [In reply to] Can't Post

Who did people contact to decline offers at programs? I know you can just say no by sending in the paperwork, but as a courtesy since others are waiting (and programs are anxious to confirm incoming students), I thought I should email the person I've had the most contact with from the program (i.e. program director or program assistant). Is that okay?

That's what I've been doing, and it's seemed to work fine. If you have a phone number they gave you, that might be good too. I don't know what the true etiquette is, but I figure if they can accept you via email or phone, it's OK to decline via email or phone too. And yes, I think this faster way is better for those who might be on a wait list!

In addition to writing or calling, make sure you send back in any response card or decline/accept documentation they've sent you. One my schools was adament about it because the grad school needs it on file.

Congratulations on all your success. University of Minnesota is a fantastic program.

If I may ask, what were the details of your TAship offer from Florida State? How many classes did they ask you to teach? Approximately how much was the stipend?

I ask because I've been accepted to FSU for fiction, and I'm on the wait-list for funding. FSU's funding is the final piece missing in my MFA puzzle before I can finally feel totally comfortable making a decision. I've asked their office about my status several times, but so far I've heard nothing. Of course I could still be declined, but it would be nice to know what might get offered if they do have an extra TAship ...

I'm going to Columbia. A nonfiction spot is going to open at Pitt, The New School, ODU and New Hampshire. Good luck everyone.

Re: [taggie7] New Hampshire [In reply to] Can't Post

I just turned down my spot in the fiction program at New Hampshire. I was first on the waitlist for funding, so hopefully this will free up a spot (and maybe some money) for people headed to UNH.

For people on other waitlists, I've turned down spots at Illinois, Purdue, Southern Illinois, McNeese and UNH. Best of luck to people on those waitlists! And to everyone else, for that matter.

In either case, the poetry faculty is v. strong, and would come down to either preference of mentors or the financial package you were offered, I would think.

Or whether you want to live in a very hot climate or a very cool one.

I live in Houston now, and there is no real winter (but I like it that way!)

The gods must be messing with me ... The check to Columbia, signed last night, is sitting on my kitchen table in a pile of outgoing mail. This morning I check my email and Pitt is offering a TA position, which means tuition plus stipend! They'll even fly me out to look at the school for Christ sake!

This whole process is making me a confused, neurotic -- but deliriously happy -- person.

Make a decision, things change; make another decision, things change ...

AGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

NYU or Iowa for poetry? [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm deciding between NYU and Iowa for poetry. I've declined New School, Brooklyn, Antioch, Sarah Lawrence and CUNY Queens. Any thoughts? It's a tough call because I live in NYC and have a family to support, and also love the faculty at NYU, but it would be great to go to Iowa. Here's the poetry faculty at NYU for next year:

Breyten Breytenbach
Kimiko Hahn
Marie Howe
Yusef Komunyakaa
Sharon Olds
Matthew Rohrer
Charles Simic
Susan Wheeler

I'm not even in poetry, so don't listen to me. But I'd do NYU for Matthew Rohrer and Charles Simic alone.

Yusef Komunyaka! Sharon Olds! Charles Simic!

Three of my all time favorite poets, not to mention all the others. No way I'd be able to turn that down.

Kimiko Hahn is one ABSOLUTELY AMAZING teacher, reader, writer, etc. I have always wanted the chance to work with her (aside from a guest session she did in a class I was once in). The woman is brilliant. Wow.

That's one really tough decision to make. I wouldn't even know how to begin, especially if you have full funding at Iowa.

Upset me:
Congratulations!! That also leaves me a little confused. I've been trading emails with someone who accepted a TA ship in Non-fiction from Pitt... I thought they could only offer one per genre? I only ask because I'm in fiction and didn't receive any aid. Who contacted you?
