Publishing & Marketing Assistant [1]
The New Press (TNP), an award-winning, not-for-profit book publisher located in the Wall Street area, has an exciting opportunity for a creative, technically savvy, detail-oriented Publishing and Marketing Assistant to join its team. The Publishing and Marketing Assistant is a key interdepartmental position that offers a unique birds-eye view of trade publishing. This is an immediate, full-time position reporting to the Publisher and the Director of Publicity and Marketing.
Key Responsibilities
As the Publishing and Marketing Assistant you will divide your time between trade marketing activities (40%), academic marketing activities (40%), and providing assistance and administrative support and some editorial support to the publisher (20%). Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Coordinating the processes of internal communications and the flow of information about forthcoming books between departments
- Assisting with planning TNP’s two seasonal publishing lists and catalogs; scheduling internal launch and jacket concept meetings; collecting/reviewing/trafficking all seasonal sales and marketing materials
- Under the direction of the director of publicity and marketing, planning, coordinating and implementing the academic marketing efforts made on behalf of TNP’s books and authors, including eblasts, academic conferences, and conference advertising
- Attending editorial meetings, seasonal launch meetings, sales conferences, academic conferences, and other meetings as needed
- Trafficking/liaising between the Editorial and Sales, Marketing and Publicity departments, working closely with the Editorial Director and the Associate Editorial Director to be sure that needed materials are developed and provided on schedule, enforcing deadlines and following up as needed
- Handling general office and administrative tasks including some correspondence, arranging payment of occasional bills and monthly submission of American Express receipts, as well as assisting with mailings and budget management
- Communicating with external constituents such as authors, agents, distributor, etc.
- Assisting with miscellaneous projects that relate to the organization’s broader mission, including collaborations to promote key backlist titles and to help disseminate books in creative ways
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent written and oral presentation and interpersonal skills; copyediting, copy writing and proofreading experience a plus—accuracy and attention to detail are essential
- Must be literate, interested in, and well-informed about current events, with ability to motivate and inspire through the written word, and to think both creatively and analytically
- Strong work ethic, highly organized, and detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently in a fast paced environment and to work collaboratively with others
- Ability to function both independently, as well as as an active team member; be proactive, take initiative, and meet deadlines
- Strong technical skills:
- MS Office (including Excel)
- Proficient with HTML coding
- Familiarity with FileMaker (a plus)
- InDesign, Photoshop and/or Illustrator—for creating collateral materials (e.g., invitations, flyers, and e- newsletters)
- Bachelor’s degree
- A minimum of one year of experience in an office environment through internships or full/part-time positions, preferably in a publishing or not-for-profit setting.
- Interest in and commitment to the ideals and mission of The New Press.
