Three independent bookstores in the San Francisco Bay area have recently closed due to declining sales.
After thirty years in business, A Clean Well-Lighted Place for Books, the popular independent bookstore in San Francisco, is closing. Owner Neil Sofman opened the store in 1975 in Cupertino, California, and moved it to San Francisco in 1982. A second location, in Larkspur, which opened in 1978, has since closed. "We deeply regret to announce that we will be closing A Clean Well-Lighted Place for Books as soon as we can liquidate our inventory," Sofman wrote in a message
