Writing from the Spirit of Service: Celebrating Joy Harjo

07/06/2019 - 4:00pm to 7:00pm

This generative poetry workshop will celebrate the work of Joy Harjo, the first Native American US Poet Laureate, just recently elected to this position. I want to celebrate this amazing news, discuss why this is such amazing news and read some favorite poems by her to inspire our writing time together.

Joy is a poet whose work serves their community and the wider world. We will read a few other poems from poets who serve their communities, too, whether that's through donating their time to prisons and hospitals, teaching youth, preserving dying languages, or speaking truth to power.

How are we as poets working in service to our communities? What is an issue you want to write more about but are afraid or intimidated to approach? Together, we will embrace the process of writing—an inherently brave act. I have a poetry prompt designed to get us flowing, based off of my favorite poem by Joy Harjo.

Workshop fee: $30
