Hillside Writing is searching for a talented, experienced, and energetic writer and teacher who is excited about mentoring clients of all ages, and who holds special interest in supporting college-application writers. Our company is at an exciting moment of development, and we are looking forward to expanding our team of seasoned coaches.
Hillside believes that everyone has unique stories to tell. We’re searching for an expert listener and conversationalist who is adept at encouraging a writer’s growth and who will be invested in helping students to discover and develop their authentic stories through Hillside’s instructive writing process. The ideal coach is a teacher in practice and at heart who instinctively fosters constructive relationships, exhibits superb communication and organizational skills, prizes close attention to the details of effective writing, and embraces collaboration that promotes team unity and professional growth. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and life experiences.
Our Writing Coach position is part-time, especially busy in summer and fall. The opportunity is perfect for stellar teachers seeking engaging employment outside the classroom and freelance writers/editors wanting flexible work hours. Our headquarters are in the Boston area, but our team is spread across the country. Almost all of our coaching is conducted remotely.
Hillside offers flexible schedules, a vibrant community of invested coaches, and a supportive learning environment for sharpening and deepening coaching skills. Compensation is project-based, with a standard feedback rate of $65/hour. The new member of our team must be able to start coaching in June 2023, and in addition to other times, must be able to offer regular weekend and evening sessions. We will compensate this creative individual for required “spring training” in Hillside’s practices and processes.
Applications must include the following materials and be submitted in a single PDF file through the form on this page: https://www.hillsidewriting.com/about/hiring/
- a cover letter specifically explaining why this opportunity appeals
- a résumé
- three references (contact information and your relationship)
- a writing sample of 5-10 pages that reflects your sensibility, ability, and voice as a writer (whether a single piece/excerpt or several shorter writings). Personal essays, creative nonfiction, and/or fiction are more helpful to our review than academic or critical writing.
Application deadline: March 17, 2023, at 12pm ET
