Volunteer Poetry Editor

Carve Magazine is seeking applicants for part-time volunteer poetry editor position. The poetry editor will work closely with the managing editor and reading committee to select poetry for publication in the quarterly issues. Because the poetry editor may perform these duties remotely, the successful applicant will have excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and self-motivate.

The poetry editor will also be expected to serve as an ambassador for Carve, tapping into local and social networks to highlight our poetry offerings and encourage others to read, submit, and subscribe to the magazine. Therefore, a highly visible social networking presence is ideal.

Responsibilities include:

  • Recruiting guest reading committee members.

  • Preliminary reading of poetry submissions.

  • Assigning poetry submissions to reading committee on a weekly basis.

  • Evaluating reading committee members’ reliability and quality of feedback.

  • Working closely with managing editor to select pieces to publish for quarterly issues.

  • Process poetry submissions and send decline/accept notices.

  • Determine when to curate and pass on feedback to declined submissions.

  • Conducting, editing, and posting Q&As with contributors on the blog.

  • Meeting strict deadlines.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least a bachelor’s degree or currently enrolled in a program working towards a degree in literature, creative writing, or publishing.

  • At least 1 year experience serving on a reading committee or editorial board.

  • Experience with Submittable platform.

  • Experience with Squarespace or similar web content management system.

  • Ability to self-motivate and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to curate feedback.

  • Familiarity with Carve’s aesthetic and publication history.

  • Passion for fulfilling Carve’s mission statement.
