James Madison University

Visiting Assistant Professor in Creative Nonfiction Writing

The Department of English at James Madison University invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professorship in Creative Nonfiction Writing. The position will begin in fall 2020 teaching online courses only, but with the possibility of teaching in-person, online, or hybrid courses in spring 2021. Secondary fields may include fiction, poetry, gender studies, disability studies, African American, Asian American, Latinx, and Native American literatures, among other fields.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory and advanced creative nonfiction writing courses, as well as special topics courses in the General Education curriculum. The English faculty does not teach freshman composition. This position carries a 3/3 teaching load. MFA or PhD in Creative Writing required by the summer of 2020.

The department is especially interested in qualified candidates who have demonstrated commitment to building an equitable and diverse creative and scholarly environment. In addition to summarizing the candidate's research, subject, and genre interests, the cover letter should describe ways in which the candidate can contribute to the diversity of the classroom, program, and university.

We will begin reviewing applications on August 6, and plan to conduct Zoom interviews of finalists on August 10 and 11. Applicants MUST apply online at joblink.jmu.edu. Applicants should upload letter of application, vita, creative nonfiction writing sample, graduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation directly to Joblink: https://joblink.jmu.edu/postings/7767.

A teaching dossier (course syllabi, classroom observations, assignments, and summaries of course evaluations, if available) will be requested from all finalists. Direct questions about this search to Erica Cavanagh (cavanaek@jmu.edu).
