The Dalton School

The Dalton Creative Writing Program Fellowship

The Dalton School, a progressive K-12 gender-inclusive school in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent independent day schools in the nation. Known for its child-centered approach and an exceptional, inspiring faculty, Dalton enrolls over 1,300 students and approximately 350 faculty and staff.

Dalton is pleased to announce The Dalton Creative Writing Program Fellowship, which is designed to increase diversity within the Program’s course offerings. Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching two classes each semester: Introduction to Creative Writing (poetry and short fiction) and an advanced writing class of the Fellow’s devising, preferably including one that encourages the expression of marginalized voices.
  • Advising 5-8 seniors in the Senior Thesis Workshop.
  • Helping informally with Blue Flag, the student literary magazine, and the Dalton Literary Festivals.

The Fellowship will be designed to offer time to write as well as support in the form of connections to the broader writing community in New York City. The Fellow will have the opportunity to meet with agents and writers in the city.

Applicants must have finished or be planning to finish an MFA or PhD in creative writing in the current or previous calendar year at the time of application. Applicants will be evaluated on the strength of their manuscripts, as well as a commitment to teaching at a high school level.

The Fellowship will include a full benefits package as well as compensation of $54,000. The Fellow may not have any other full or part time work, and is expected to be fully committed to teaching as well as writing. The Fellowship is for one year.
