Submissions Editor/Barista

The Fictional Cafe seeks candidates for the Submissions Editor/Barista position. 

The Fictional Cafe (FC) is an online 'zine and coffeehouse, established in 2013. Since its birth, it has grown to some 600 Coffee Club members in 44 countries. We publish fiction (short stories and novel excerpts), poetry, creative nonfiction, fine art, photography, audio arts (podcasts and audiobook excerpts), and short fictional videos.

Please visit the FC site to familiarize yourself with our ‘zine and all eight of us Baristas. We are all volunteers and are not compensated for our work, nor do we ask contributors for payment. Everything is free. 

Your duties involve being the first person to greet new members and log submissions, all via e-mail;  most submissions are fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction (individual Baristas bring in most of the other works). You don't read or evaluate submissions; that's done by subject-area Baristas. You’ll be given a Microsoft Office account with which to manage your work using Word, Excel, Outlook, and OneDrive. Experience helpful, but not a requirement. 

We estimate the work will require an hour or less of your time per week. If, after 60 days, we’re pleased with your work and you like the job, we will give you personal business cards. This is a growth position; most of us have done this job, then advanced to become a subject-area Barista. We feel it’s a great opportunity to learn the publishing business and what kind of work you would like to do.
