Publicity Director

Penzler Publishers is seeking a Publicity Director to work independently on titles for all imprints (American Mystery Classics, Scarlet, The Mysterious Press, and MysteriousPress.com). Additional responsibilities would include handling publicity for the Mysterious Bookshop and Otto Penzler’s books.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement publicity strategies for a large list of titles, including both bestselling and debut authors
  • Oversee all aspects of campaigns, including media, review coverage and bookseller events.
  • Help authors understand the forward process of book publicity and promotion.
  • Leverage traditional and digital media to drive awareness.
  • Have existing media relationships and create content and mailings to media contacts.
  • Maintain publicity lists/contacts.


Requirements:

  • Some knowledge of mystery/crime/suspense/espionage/detective fiction is essential.
  • Minimum of three years of publicity experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate appropriately across all levels and divisions of the company as well as with external parties
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team
  • Creative, innovative and resourceful approach to publicity and possess excellent knowledge of diverse media outlets
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs
     

Founded in 1975, the Mysterious Press publishes original literary crime fiction. Among its current authors are Joyce Carol Oates, Thomas Perry, Ken Bruen, David Gordon, Robert Olen Butler, Michael Kardos, Thomas H. Cook, and James Carlos Blake. Among the authors it has published are Eric Ambler, James Ellroy, Ruth Rendell, Patricia Highsmith, Ross Thomas, Len Deighton, P.D. James, Joseph Wambaugh, Ed McBain, Margaret Maron, Donald E. Westlake, and Kingsley Amis. Currently an imprint at Grove Atlantic, it will become an imprint of Penzler Publishers in 2021.

Founded in 2018, American Mystery Classics reissues in hardcover and trade paperback the great crime fiction of the American Golden of detective fiction, including books by Ellery Queen, Mary Roberts Rinehart, Erle Stanley Gardner, John P. Marquand, Dorothy B. Hughes, and John Dickson Carr.

Scarlet is a new imprint that will debut in September, publishing psychological/domestic suspense.

MysteriousPress.com, founded in 2011, publishes as e-books a wide range of mystery fiction with approximately 1,800 titles in print, including the books of Donald E. Westlake, Ellis Peters, Charlotte MacLeod, Ellery Queen, William Bernhardt, Robert Goldsborough, William Buckley, Joan Hess, and Stuart Kaminsky.

The Mysterious Bookshop, located in Tribeca, was founded in 1979 and is regarded as the world’s leading independent bookshop devoted to the mystery category.

Otto Penzler, a two-time Edgar Award-winner, has written books and edited anthologies, with more than 60 titles to his credit.
