Managing Editor, Web,

We’re looking for a creative, experienced, and highly organized managing editor to work on our online magazine and help manage the day-to-day operational flow for the web editorial team. This individual will report directly to the web editor-in-chief.


Acquire, edit, publish, and help promote 3-4 magazine stories each week, shepherding all pieces from pitch to publication

Work with editor-in-chief to create and maintain the editorial calendar, with a focus on scheduling/working several weeks ahead

Assist in monitoring and adhering to monthly web editorial budget

Respond to readers’ and authors’ questions about the website, the magazine, payment process, etc.

Offer prompt and insightful feedback to editorial colleagues on pitches, stories in development, any author issues, headlines, and images

Work with social media editor(s) to promote magazine pieces online and expand audience and engagement

Develop and maintain good professional working relationships with an array of freelance writers and artists

Demonstrate ongoing understanding of and commitment to the mission and guiding principles of the magazine

Work with the entire web editorial team for the improvement and long-term growth of the magazine


Associate’s Degree or higher

At least two years of editorial experience with an online publication

Well versed in contemporary literary writing and writers, both fiction and nonfiction

Skilled at writing headlines/subheads/teaser text and selecting images that perform well on the web/social media and boost search engine-based traffic

Familiarity with web CMS such as Wordpress or Drupal, and a basic knowledge of HTML

Experience writing and editing both short and longform content for the web

Excellent content and copyediting skills

Commitment to thoroughness and accuracy, with strong attention to detail

Excellent communication/interpersonal/teamwork skills

Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines both short and long, and work well under pressure while maintaining high standards

Command of Microsoft Word and Google Drive/Docs, with a focus on electronic editing tasks

Social media proficiency

Familiarity with Photoshop a plus
