POSITION OVERVIEW
Salary range: Salary is based on previous college-level teaching experience and equity within the department.
Percent time: Positions may range from 17% to 100% time during the academic year, while summer appointments are handled on a by-agreement basis.
Anticipated start: Positions usually start in January, various times throughout the summer and August. Applications are typically reviewed in February and March for summer course needs, in April and May for fall course needs, and in September and October for spring course needs.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The College Writing Programs (CWP) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of temporary instructors to teach courses in CWP should openings arise. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies depending on the needs of the department.
Position titles: Lecturer, Lecturer in Summer Sessions.
Job duties:
Successful applicants will teach in one or more of CWP’s programs:
• Reading and Composition sequence or other CWP courses in writing, reading, and oral communication
• Creative Writing
• Summer English Language Studies (SELS)
• Summer minor/certificate in English Language Education
They will have complete responsibility for classes that includes teaching in a classroom environment, meeting with students during scheduled weekly office hours and by appointment, and grading student work. We have a limited number of courses that are offered in online formats.
UC lecturers are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement of the UC-AFT. Internal candidates will be considered for reappointment prior to the consideration of external Unit 18 applicants in the lecturer pool.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Advanced degree or enrolled in an advanced degree program.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Completion of advanced degree and three years of university-level teaching experience are required.
International applicants must also have permission to work in the U.S. by start date. We cannot sponsor US visas for employment.
Preferred qualifications
A Ph.D., M.F.A., or equivalent international degree in one of the following fields:
o composition studies
o rhetoric and composition
o digital rhetoric
o second-language writing/ESL/applied linguistics
o education
o creative writing
Three or more years of experience teaching university-level composition, creative writing, or ESL/EFL
Evidence of ongoing professional development
Evidence of clear communication skills as presented in application materials
If applying to the SELS program, these additional qualifications are desired:
o Experience with content-, theme-, and project-based teaching
o Experience living/working outside of the U.S. in a non-English speaking country
o Basic proficiency in a language other than English
