The College Writing Programs at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in the College Writing Programs should an opening arise. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester depending on the needs of the department. Positions may range from 17% to 100% time during the academic year, while summer appointments are handled on a by-agreement basis.
We especially invite applications for creative writing instructor positions to teach classes in summer 2021.
Due to COVID 19, UC Berkeley began the academic year with fully remote instruction. Depending on public health conditions, the need for remote education and virtual classrooms may continue. Instructors must have Internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches to develop asynchronous instructional materials, foster student-to-student interaction, and reimagine assignments and exams for a remote format.
Position titles: Lecturer, Lecturer in Summer Sessions.
Job duties: Successful applicants will teach in CWP’s Reading and Composition sequence or other CWP courses in writing, reading, and oral communication. They will have complete responsibility for classes to include teaching in a classroom environment, meeting with students during scheduled weekly office hours and by appointment, and grading student work.
Basic qualifications (at time of application): Advanced degree or enrolled in an advanced degree program.
Additional qualifications (by start date): Completion of advanced degree or equivalent international degree, and two years of university-level teaching experience are required.
Foreign applicants must also have permission to work in the U.S. by start date.
Preferred qualifications (by start date): A Ph.D., M.F.A., or equivalent international degree in one of the following fields:
- composition studies
- rhetoric and composition
- digital rhetoric
- second-language writing/ESL/applied linguistics
- education
- creative writing
- Three or more years of experience teaching university-level composition or creative writing.
- Evidence of clear writing as presented in application materials.
Salary: $56,381-$97,060 annual rate during academic year; by agreement in Summer Sessions.
UC lecturers are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC- AFT). This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement of the UC- AFT.
