Internship

JuxtaProse is an online literary journal that publishes literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. We pride ourselves on featuring work from emerging writers alongside material from some of the most respected voices in contemporary literature. Previous contributors include Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, and Nation Book Critics Circle finalists and winners, winners of international awards such as the Man Booker International Prize, Griffin Prize, Stakis Prize, and Israel's Prime Minister Prize, and over two dozen contributors to the Best American series. Material originally published in JuxtaProse has been reprinted in collections published by HarperCollins and Penguin. JuxtaProse currently enjoys a monthly readership of approximately 4,000.

 

FICTION INTERN

We are seeking to expand our current staff by bringing on a fiction intern to help ease the workload on our fiction editors. As a predominately online publication, our staff serve remotely and telecommute to a weekly meeting held each Thursday at 7:30 pm Mountain Time (6:30 pm Pacific, 9:30 pm Eastern). The selected individual will be required to attend the meeting each week and will also assist our editors in reading submissions, maintaining records, and corresponding with authors, including sending out acceptance and rejection letters. The ideal candidate will have previous literary journal experience. Please send resumes to editor@juxtaprosemagazine.org

ART INTERN

We are currently seeking an intern to assist with various duties related to the selection and publication of the journal's artwork. The position is unpaid and will consist of 5-10 hours per week. To apply, please send your resume and a brief message explaining why you are interested in the position to editor@juxtaprosemagazine.org by September 30th. Applicants must be available for a minimum six-month commitment.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate with Art Editor to reach out to various platforms (universities, galleries, independent artists) and establish relationships with new artists of all skill levels.
  • Help maintain relationships with returning artists.
  • Organize new and published art works.

We are looking for some who is:

  • Organized and dependable 
  • Art related field of study preferred, but not required.
  • Familiar with artistic principles

 

BLOGGING INTERN

We are seeking to hire a blogging intern to help us further expand the JuxtaProse brand. The goal of this position is not merely to increase recognition of the brand name or to drive traffic to the blog, but rather to translate blog activity into increases in key indicators including increases in readership, contest participation and quantity and quality of submissions. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of professional blogging experience and familiarity with the literary journal/small press market. Although our social media accounts will be overseen by our Social Media Coordinator, a high level of proficiency in social media is also desirable.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of or current enrollment in Bachelor’s degree (Business/Marketing/Communications or English)
  • Outstanding proficiency with Facebook and Twitter including sound understanding of social media analytics
  • High degree of familiarity with social media
  • Ability to research, recognize, and adapt to blogging trends (and particularly those within the publishing industry)
  • Ability to develop and execute a weekly blogging schedule based on peak times and click through rates
  • Outstanding deadline management skills
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills
  • Effective communication with other bloggers
  • Effective communication with social media intern to magnify and compliment each other's efforts
  • Professional communication skills in all other areas

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Minimum commitment of 10 hours per week for at least 3 months, priority will be given to applicants who are able to commit for at least 6 months -- should they receive favorable performance reviews
  • Attend weekly Editors meeting, Tuesdays 7:30 pm MST as needed
  • Develop and execute a consistent weekly blogging schedule
  • Continually evolve blogging campaign based on analytics and key indicator feedback
  • Research and implement keys points of successful blogs from similar publications
  • Network with bloggers from other similar publications
  • Research interviews from other similar publications
  • Effectively conduct author interviews and coordinate interview responsibilities among other employees
  • Effectively coordinate with other JuxtaProse bloggers, or other employees with blog-related responsibilities
  • Assist with live coverage of breaking news and events
  • Consistently meet deadlines

 

SOCIAL MEDIA INTERN

We are seeking to hire a social media intern to help better integrate our brand into the online literary community and more fully establish it in the public consciousness. Our goal is not merely to increase our brand awareness across social media platforms, but to translate this into measurable increases in key indicators including increased volume and quality of submissions, monthly readership, and contest entries. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of professional social media experience and familiarity with the contemporary literary market.
