Ohio University is seeking a talented individual capable of sustaining and growing a complex academic and trade publishing operation. The Director reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost and will have broad authority and responsibility for oversight of the strategic development, administration, and fundraising of the Press.
The responsibilities include the following:
The Director leads the development and implementation of the Press’ strategic and operational plans. They will look for and encourage the development of innovative and sustainable solutions to further its mission in academic publishing. They will seek to identify long-term publishing trends and position the Press to engage future opportunities and challenges.
The Director will support and strengthen the capacity of the Press personnel and their access to financial resources and infrastructure to manage and support their work and mission. This includes the recruitment and supervision of personnel, securing and monitoring financial and other resources, and managing the distribution partnerships of Ohio University Press and Swallow Press.
The Press is composed of nine full-time and two part-time staff members. Five to ten Ohio University students provide additional support.
The Director will work with an acquisitions editor, a permissions and acquisitions administrator, and series editors to identify and acquire 45 to 50 meaningful, competitive, and thought-provoking academic and trade titles per year. They will aim to grow existing series in addition to securing and developing manuscripts in new areas, series, and concentrations. They will maintain and seek new partnerships with academic departments and centers at Ohio University and other institutions. They will serve as Executive Editor on book series associated with the Ohio University Center for International Studies.
The Director will oversee the marketing, publicity, sales, and licensing of print and electronic books. They will guide and supervise the Press’s foreign rights programs and co-publishing agreements.
Fundraising and Advocacy:
The Director will develop university-wide, national, an international connections—through faculty, authors, customers, vendors, donors, and others—to increase the standing of the Press. In cooperation with the University Advancement office, they will create fundraising strategies and campaigns for the Press.
Advisory Board and Committees
The Director works with the Vice Provost for Academic Affair to recommend and invite Ohio University faculty and administrators to serve on the Ohio University Press and Swallow Press Publications Advisory Boards.
The Director will work closely with deans, administrators, and other university leaders to maintain an awareness of the Press’s scholarly mission and to develop and implement strategies that align the Press with the University’s academic mission and priorities.
This position is located on Ohio University’s main campus in Athens, Ohio. This quintessential college town is located along the Hocking River and was voted by the readers of USA Today as one of the best small college towns in the United States. This great college town has helped the University’s tremendous growth over the last 15+ years. The student enrollment increased by 41 percent from 2003 to 2013 and this growth continues today because of excellent educational and research programs and innovation, as well as strong support services and a tremendous alumni base.
The successful candidate will:
- Possess a bachelor’s degree and preferably a graduate degree.
- Demonstrate an exceptional ability to collaborate and communicate with a broad range of constituencies: academics, publishing and business professionals, higher-education administrators, alumni and donors, etc. Candidates must have a superior track record of leading and motivating a team of professionals in a collaborative, friendly, and results-driven environment.
- Possess a keen sense of business and management of resources to identify and implement innovative business models and strategies. Candidates must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the challenges of running a production-oriented business and a sensitivity to operational details.
- Demonstrate an understanding of manuscript acquisition and development based on direct experience with publishing, preferably academic publishing. Candidates must show they can work with acquisitions and series editors to develop lists and publishing programs. Prior experience working effectively and creatively in those areas is a plus.
- Possess experience working and interacting with governing boards, peer review committees, and other volunteer leaders.
- Have experience working with both university advancement and alumni relations.
