Development Writer

The McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT seeks a full-time development writer to manage development communications activities to support the solicitation and stewardship of donors and prospects of the McGovern Institute.


Write, edit, and develop a wide variety of materials (e.g., major gift proposals, cases for support, stewardship reports, program overviews and gift menus, fact sheets, acknowledgment and appeal letters, and occasional web and newsletter pieces) for a donor audience

Communicate the urgent case for supporting scientific research and the impact of donor philanthropy to the McGovern Institute community and broader society

Work with the development officer, communications officer, faculty, and researchers to create high-quality, donor-centered materials with consistent messaging and standards and a compelling story

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a concentration in English, journalism, communications, or related area
  • At least three years’ communications, writing, or related experience
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Accurate proofreading skills
  • Experience giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • Analytic and research skills for gathering and determining essential data from scientific sources and researchers
  • Ability to complete multiple complex assignments in a deadline-driven environment, either independently with minimal supervision and/or as part of a project team
  • Initiative and ability to develop new projects that will help deepen current donor relationships and forge new ones
  • Solid general computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office
  • Ability to engage effectively with researchers, administrative leaders, donors, prospects, and administrative colleagues
  • Discretion with confidential information

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Writing experience in a research, nonprofit, academic, or health care environment
