Behind the Book

Classroom Volunteer/Writing Coach

Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires students in high-needs New York City public schools to explore stories and empower their voices.

We identify books that speak to Pre-K–12th-graders, then work with teachers to develop immersive curriculum units that bring the authors into the classroom to discuss their work, and guide students in creating their own content in the same genre. Our rich, innovative programs are part of the curricula, and adhere to Common Core Learning Standards.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a coach, you'll engage and encourage students as they work on editing, research, or art projects. We provide advance information on your role, and hold a brief orientation right before a workshop begins.

To join our volunteer team and receive announcements of new program dates as they're scheduled, please submit our brief questionnaire at https://www.behindthebook.org/join-us/volunteer.
