The University of Alabama Department of English seeks an individual with an outstanding record of proven leadership, teaching, research, and service, to be hired at the rank of Full Professor with tenure for the 12 month position of Chair. The successful candidate must be internationally recognized within their field, have an active research program that includes external funding and can continue to advance the research goals and stature of the faculty at a tier-one research institution. This candidate should be able to forge a dynamic vision for the department by working with the faculty, and communicate that vision to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Provost of the University. Expected start date August 16, 2020.
We seek a chair who can build upon our strong foundation to increase the quality of our students’ experience and advance the Department’s prestige and visibility in the disciplines of Creative Writing, Composition and Rhetoric, English Literature, and Linguistics. The applicant should have a vision for maintaining our programs with national reputations, such as Creative Writing and the Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies, and moving others toward that status. The applicant should possess proven leadership abilities, with a minimum of three years of significant administrative experience, and have an enthusiasm for the University’s teaching and research missions. The candidate must hold an MFA in Creative Writing or a PhD in Creative Writing, Composition, English Literature, Linguistics, or the equivalent, and have expertise which complements that of existing faculty and future plans for departmental growth.
In addition, the successful candidate should demonstrate a proven record in the following areas:
- vigorous advocacy on behalf of faculty, staff, and students;
- excellent leadership, particularly promoting collegiality in team-building, implementing change, and coordinating diverse approaches to teaching and research;
- innovative curriculum and program maintenance and development;
- commitment to cross-curricular and interdisciplinary work;
- excellent budget oversight and facilities management;
- experience with assessment plans and assessment data interpretation;
- commitment to diversity in faculty, staff, and programming;
- inspirational mentoring of colleagues and students.
