Business and Circulation Manager

Role Description

The Business and Circulation Manager has two major areas of responsibility: 1) manage the business strategy, data, and analytics of Poetry magazine, including direction regarding revenue and budget; 2) manage Poetry circulation and fulfillment, including coordination with the marketing team regarding promotions, customer service, and presence at events. The role reports to the chief operating officer, coordinates closely with the editorial and marketing teams, and manages the relationship with external contractors. This is a hybrid position, with three days onsite in the Chicago office and two days remote.

Salary: $90,000-$100,000

The Objectives You Will Meet

  • Business and Advertising

  • Provide consultative direction regarding revenue, pricing, and fulfillment.

  • Review quarterly budgets, provide operating updates, and regularly analyze data around how Poetry is performing, benchmarking them against goals and providing suggestions for improvement or growth.

  • Manage advertisement sales including reservation, placement, and billing (monthly); coordinate with the finance assistant to maintain advertising payment records.

  • In consultation with the editorial team, educate and influence on how to best position digital content for campaigns and digital advertising. 

  • With editorial team, coordinate Poetry’s logistics for book fairs, conferences, and literary events.

  • Manage inventory (in-house and off-site storage).

  • Circulation and Fulfillment

  • Review and execute monthly print orders and invoices from fulfillment company, newsstand distributors, postal service, contributors, printer, and the Poetry Foundation office, with assistance from consultants.

  • Oversee quality control review of fulfillment operations with account management and department representatives; oversee/review information sessions with customer service associates to ensure quality control and brand messaging.

  • Negotiate with fulfillment company and printer on contracts and pricing matters.

  • Liaise with the marketing team to provide direction for marketing campaigns; provide editorial business projections, scope and goals.

  • Create and distribute circulation reports to editorial, marketing, and finance teams; develop quarterly promotions report with marketing team.

  • Continuously identify opportunities for improvement in magazine business and strategies to increase productivity and cost-effectiveness with the consultant and editorial team.

How You Will Meet These Requirements

The ideal candidate will bring these skills, experience, and knowledge to the role:

  • A proven track record within a sales, product marketing, or publishing environment.

  • Excellent problem solving and strategic thinking skills with the ability to work independently.

  • Strong analytic, quantitative, and technical aptitude with great attention to detail.

  • Understanding of cost-per-click and cost-per-acquisition cost models and KPIs associated with publisher ecosystem (e.g., conversion, cost of sale, cost per copy) is a plus.

  • Experience negotiating and managing contracts, processing invoices, and ad sales.

  • Strong organization and project implementation skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail and communication skills, including a willingness to express concerns and share ideas.

  • Creative and proactive approach to achieving goals and reaching new audiences.

  • Proficiency in Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office (especially spreadsheets), Asana, CRMs, and Adobe Acrobat programs is strongly preferred.

  • Experience automating or streamlining tasks is a plus. A general knowledge of poetry is helpful but not required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often sitting for prolonged periods in an indoor office environment.

  • Must be able to navigate throughout various offices of the building.

  • Communicating with others to exchange information and perform duties.

  • Ability to read materials on a computer screen.

  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

  • Moderate noise level consistent with an office environment.

  • This role will have to occasionally pack and lift boxes of issues, up to 25 lbs.

  • Occasional offsite work or travel.

  • Staff works a hybrid schedule and is required to be in the office during business hours, onsite a minimum of three days per week (Wednesday is required of all staff).
