The Department of English in the College of Arts and Humanities at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in rhetoric and composition with an emphasis in writing-across-the-curriculum and/or writing in the disciplines. Applicants with a specialty in WAC/WID are preferred. Applicants with expertise in writing center pedagogy, first-year writing pedagogy, or program administration will be considered. The successful applicant will direct the WAC/WID program which will support faculty across the university in designing the upper-division writing curriculum, will lead workshops, and faculty learning communities, and will provide individual consultations. Course releases will be provided for the program administration part of this position. Additionally, the successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct scholarly and applied research, and engage in service-related activities. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in rhetoric and composition, core courses for M.A. in Rhetoric and Writing Studies, literacy and rhetoric courses in the English Education program, first-year and upper-division writing courses, as well as topics courses in area(s) of specialty, specific assignments may vary with department needs.

Required Education: (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.): An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in or with emphasis on rhetoric and composition is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/1/2020).
- Expertise in WAC/WID or closely related area,
- Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level;
- Evidence of scholarly activity, including conference presentations and / or publications in scholarly journals; and
- Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Additional expertise in Generation 1.5 literacy, intercultural writing, writing assessment, or writing theory;
- Interest in connecting research to California's Central Valley community, and
- Ability to use technology in the classroom.

About the College and Department:
The Rhetoric and Writing Studies program in the Department of English has a long standing and vibrant graduate MA option focusing primarily on writing pedagogy at the secondary and postsecondary level. The majority of our graduate students are high school teachers, students who hope to become community college teachers, or those who plan to pursue a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition. Graduate students in our M.A. Program have presented their research at regional and national conferences in rhetoric, composition, writing center, and literature studies, and the university offers some funding to support faculty sponsorship of professional development of our graduate students. Additionally, we have a healthy Teaching Associate program that includes approximately 20 graduate students each year and provides robust professional development for these teachers. We have a large writing center that implements innovative practices of both semester-long, group tutorials as well as one on one individual sessions. Our program at the graduate and undergraduate levels have had a long history of collaborating with our English Education faculty to support the robust teaching of literacy in secondary education as well. Faculty in our program also reach out to secondary teachers across the Central Valley and the state of California to support their teaching of the Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum, including support of Integrated and Designated English Language Development; this multi state-wide collaboration across institutions (higher education, secondary, and office of education) is currently working under two federal grants totaling about $17 million. We are currently developing our undergraduate program, which was recently revised last year to focus on English Studies and provides opportunities for candidates to teach topics courses in specialized areas, diversity courses, writing courses, as well as introductory and capstone courses in the major. Our program continues to grow and is looking forward to creating an option or a minor at the undergraduate level.
Our program is part of a vibrant English Department that is committed to the diverse student population we teach. Undergraduate class size is typically 25; graduate class size is at 15. While the teaching load of all faculty at California State Universities is 12 units per semester, we teach 4-unit courses, effectively giving us a 3/3 load. Faculty members have ample opportunity to design courses in response to changes in the field, student interests, and their own scholarly leanings. Our faculty comprises scholars of literature, creative writing, and rhetoric and composition who support our undergraduate majors in English and English Education, and our Master’s degrees with Literature and Rhetoric and Writing Studies options. Our department also has a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry, Fiction, and Nonfiction, as well as a minor and undergraduate option in Creative Writing. In our cutting-edge First-Year Writing Program, we use Directed Self-Placement to help students place themselves in one of two options, with supplemental support as well, to meet the first-year writing requirement, and one of the options includes a stretch program. Tenure-track faculty, part-time faculty, and graduate teaching associates teach about 160 sections of our three first-year writing courses to over 3600 undergraduate students annually. Additionally, our university teaches over 100 writing intensive courses at the upper division level across multiple disciplines. The English Department is home to The Normal School literary magazine and three other literary journals. It also has an active Sigma Tau Delta chapter. Students and faculty alike have a strong sense of community relationship, manifested in their organizing of the Central Valley-wide Young Writers Conference, and in their serving as base for the Chicano Writers and Artists Association. Every year the English department organizes the Undergraduate Conference on Multiethnic Literatures of the Americas, which is now in its eleventh year of promoting and celebrating undergraduate research and scholarship.
