Assistant Professor of Creative Writing, Creative Nonfiction (Tenure Track)

Stony Brook University's Creative Writing and Literature Program seeks a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor of Creative Writing to start September 1, 2019.  This position carries a 3/2 teaching load of creative writing and literature courses, as well as thesis direction, and advising at both the undergraduate and graduate levels on two campuses, located within an hour commute of each other.  Undergraduate courses are held at Stony Brook; MFA courses are held in Southampton. CWL is the flagship program in an entrepreneurial, innovative department that also offers an MFA in Film and, during July, workshops for visiting students through the Southampton Writers Conference. Writers Speak, its reading series, brings writers of national reputation in all literary genres to campus; TSR: The Southampton Review, its literary magazine, publishes original writing and artwork from established and emerging voices. The successful candidate will contribute to these activities. Faculty members with leadership roles receive course release. Opportunities to teach at the Manhattan Center for Creative Writing and Film are possible according to interest and program need.  Early career, writers of color, LGBTQ, as well as diverse voices are strongly encouraged to apply. 

Required Qualifications 
Candidates must have a strong record of publication, including at least one memoir or creative nonfiction collection of literary merit from a respected press; an MFA in Creative Writing or the equivalent, such as a BA with an exceptionally strong record of publication of creative nonfiction or a PhD with a strong record of publication of creative nonfiction; and evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

Preferred Qualifications 
Publication in and the ability to teach literary fiction or literary genre fiction.  Interest and/or experience in teaching culturally diverse curricula.  Interest and/or experience in program leadership, as, for example, building a reading series or advising a student literary journal. Academic or community service.
