Author's Bio

I am a poet of the American colloquial, and a student of the inner life in the context of the cultural.I have published six collections of poetry. My poems are witty, swift, kinetic, fierce, topical, and highly textured with contemporary social reality and the idioms of our time.I've written two books of essays about contemporary poetics, and I'm deeply committed to teaching poetry to poets, teachers and students at every level, as an lively and life-affirming communicative mode. I've taught many workshops for teachers through a program called Five Powers of Poetry. I teach at the University of Houston, and in many community workshops.
