The 14th annual Eckerd College Writers’ Conference: Writers in Paradise was held from January 13, 2018, to January 20, 2018, at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. The conference featured lectures, panels, roundtable discussions, readings, and workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. The faculty included poets Richard Blanco, Denise Duhamel, Major Jackson, and Peter Meinke; fiction writers Lan Samantha Chang, Andre Dubus III, Laura Lippman, Stewart O’Nan, Cathie Pelletier, Les Standiford, Sterling Watson; creative nonfiction writers Ann Hood and Helen Wallace; editor Colleen Lawrie (PublicAffairs); and agent Alexis Hurley (InkWell Management). The cost of the conference was $875, which did not include lodging or meals. Lodging was available at the nearby Magnuson Cove Hotel for a discounted rate of $77 per night, and at the Avalon Hotel in downtown St. Petersburg for $113 per night. Scholarships were available. Using the online application system, writers submitted a writing sample of 10 to 15 pages of poetry or up to 25 pages of prose (and a synopsis for excerpts of book-length works) and an artist statement with a $25 application fee by November 15, 2017.
