The 2018 Bear River Writers’ Conference, sponsored by the University of Michigan, was held from May 31 to June 4 at Camp Michigania on Walloon Lake, near Petoskey, Michigan. The conference featured workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings, discussions, nature walks, and time to write. The faculty included poets Tarfia Faizullah, Ross Gay, Thomas Lynch, Jamaal May, and Richard Tillinghast; poet and fiction writer Laura Kasischke; fiction writers Desiree Coope, Antonya Nelson, and Douglas Trevor; and creative nonfiction writers Jerry Dennis and Mardi Link. Tuition, including all meals and lodging, ranged from $715 for a bunk room to $875 for a private room with a private bathroom. The cost without lodging was $625. A deposit was required to secure enrollment; the balance was due by May 5. A limited number of full and partial scholarships were available; writers submitted a brief personal statement and up to eight pages of poetry or 10 pages of prose by March 12.
