The 2017 Bear River Writers’ Conference, sponsored by the University of Michigan, was held from June 1 to June 5 at Camp Michigania on Walloon Lake, near Petoskey, Michigan. The conference featured workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings, discussions, nature walks, and time to write. The faculty included poets Tarfia Faizullah, Thomas Lynch, Jamaal May, and Richard Tillinghast; poet and fiction writer Laura Kasischke; fiction writers Antonya Nelson and Claire Vaye Watkins; and creative nonfiction writers Jerry Dennis and Donovan Hohn. Tuition, including all meals, was $625. Lodging was available at the camp in shared or private cabins from $90 to $250. A $100 deposit was required to secure enrollment; the balance was due by May 5. Full and partial scholarships were available; writers submitted a brief personal statement and up to eight pages of poetry or 10 pages of prose by March 13. Visit the website for complete guidelines.
