The Glass Castle (Scribner, 2005), the best-selling debut memoir by Jeannette Walls about her childhood in a nomadic family dealing with dysfunction and poverty, has been adapted into a feature film. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film stars Woody Harrelson, Brie Larson, and Naomi Watts.
Based on the 1966 Southern gothic novel by Thomas Cullinan, The Beguiled takes place during the Civil War as a young, injured Union Army corporal is taken in at a Southern girls’ boarding school. This film adaptation is written and directed by Sofia Coppola and stars Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, and Colin Farrell.
Poet and actress Amber Tamblyn makes her directorial debut with the film adaptation of Janet Fitch’s novel Paint It Black (Little, Brown, 2006), which stars Janet McTeer, Alfred Molina, and Alia Shawkat. The film is set in the 1980s Los Angeles punk scene and follows a young woman dealing with the aftermath of her boyfriend’s death, and her conflicted relationship with his grieving mother.
The Dark Tower is a film sequel to Stephen King’s eight-novel series of the same name, which was published between 1982 and 2004 and inspired by Robert Browning’s poem “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came.” Directed by Nikolaj Arcel and starring Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, and Katheryn Winnick, the film will premiere in August.
The Circle (Knopf/McSweeney’s Books, 2013), Dave Eggers’s dystopian novel about a young woman who rises through the ranks of a powerful tech and social media company, has been adapted into a feature film. Directed by James Ponsoldt, the film stars John Boyega, Tom Hanks, and Emma Watson.
Herman Koch’s novel, The Dinner (Hogarth, 2012), translated from the Dutch by Sam Garrett, has been adapted into a feature film directed by Oren Moverman and starring Steve Coogan, Richard Gere, Rebecca Hall, and Laura Linney. The story unfolds over the course of a dinner as two couples struggle over moral implications surrounding a crime committed by their teenage sons.
Rebecca Skloot’s nonfiction book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (Crown Publishing Group, 2010), which explores the life and legacy of an African American woman whose cells became the basis of numerous scientific breakthroughs, has been adapted into a television movie starring Oprah Winfrey and Rose Byrne.
Diane Ackerman’s The Zookeeper’s Wife: A War Story (Norton, 2007) recounts the true story of how keepers of the Warsaw Zoo saved hundreds of lives during the German invasion in Poland. The book has been adapted into a feature film directed by Niki Caro, and stars Jessica Chastain and Johan Heldenbergh.
Daniel Clowes’s graphic novel Wilson (Drawn and Quarterly, 2010) has been adapted into a feature film starring Isabella Amara, Laura Dern, and Woody Harrelson. Directed by Craig Johnson, the film follows the comedic story of a lonely middle-aged man who reconnects with his estranged wife to search for their daughter who was given up for adoption.
T2 Trainspotting is the sequel to director Danny Boyle’s 1996 film, Trainspotting, an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s debut novel of the same name. The sequel, based on Welsh’s novel Porno (Norton, 2002), takes place twenty years later and reunites cast members Ewen Bremner, Robert Carlyle, Kelly Macdonald, Ewan McGregor, and Jonny Lee Miller.
