The Isaac Taylor Garden is an events venue in the historic district of downtown New Bern. On Wednesdays in August and September, open mic events in the outdoor garden showcase creative talent. The open mic is free and open to the public from 6:00 - 9:00 PM.
Housed in a former foundry, Trent River Coffee Company has a full coffee bar and retail coffee shop, serves pastries and breads, and hosts a poetry open mic event on the first Tuesday of every month.
The Creative Writing and Poetics MFA program at Naropa University hosts numerous events and visiting faculty during the academic year: What Where Series, JKS Symposium, [Dis]embodied Poetics Conference, Allen Ginsberg Visiting Fellow, Leslie Scalapino Lecture in Innovative Poetics, Embodied Poetics (collaboration with MFA Theater program), Women of Naropa reading, and the 4x4 Student Reading Series.
Each year, the Creative Writing MFA Program located in the Universit of Colorado Boulder's Department of English hosts the Creative Writing Reading Series to bring innovative writers to the university for a free, on-campus reading. Past readers include National Book Award winner Terrance Hayes, Susan Steinberg, CAConrad, Ronaldo Wilson, Brian Evenson, Lynne Tillman, Claudia Rankine, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Pulitzer Prize winner Rae Armantrout.
Lan Su Chinese Garden is a nonprofit botanical garden that frequently hosts a variety of tours, workshops, demonstrations, classes, lectures and readings, performances, and exhibits. During the year, members and visitors alike have the opportunity to experience a variety of activities, which enhance visitors’ understanding of Chinese culture and provide opportunities to learn and play. All activities, unless otherwise noted, are free with membership or admission.
The Visiting Writer Series at Reed College is sponsored by the Department of English. The intent is to bring interesting and diverse writers of prose and poetry to Reed to do readings and discussions. The department maintains a mailing list to which interested people can subscribe, to receive details of the upcoming readings.
The Visiting Writers Series takes place in the Eliot Chapel. The readings begin at 6:30PM. Books are sold and refreshments are served.
A Poetry Salon event series occurs one Thursday per month from 4:30-6:00PM in Greywood Lounge.
