New York, NY—June 6, 2019—Poets & Writers, Inc. is pleased to announce that the organization has been approved for an Art Works grant of $70,000 from the National Endowment for the arts. This grant will support our flagship publication, Poets & Writers Magazine, and the development of new content and resources on pw.org, including a new tool that will enable writers to form, join, and manage writing groups.
“This award comes at an exciting moment for Poets & Writers, as we prepare to celebrate our 50th Anniversary in 2020,” said Elliot Figman, the organization’s executive director. “This crucial support from the National Endowment for the Arts will help us enact a bold vision of empowering creative writers and strengthening literary communities in every corner of the United States. Throughout our history, the Endowment has bolstered our ability to serve creative writers. It was a grant from the Endowment that supported the launch of pw.org back in 1996, and funding from the NEA has helped us improve the website over the years. Recently, the Endowment supported an overhaul of the Poets & Writers Directory, enabling us to update and enrich a resource that serves as a professional calling-card for over 10,000 authors. We are deeply grateful to the Endowment for its vital funding of the arts, and to the people of the United States who make this funding possible.”
The grant to Poets & Writers was announced as part of more than $80 million in Art Works grants approved by National Endowment for the Arts by acting chairman Mary Anne Carter. Art Works is the Endowment’s principal grantmaking program. The agency received 1,592 applications for this round of grantmaking and will award 977 grants in this category. “These awards, reaching every corner of the United States, are a testament to the artistic richness and diversity in our country,” said Mary Anne Carter. “Organizations such as Poets & Writers are giving people in their community the opportunity to learn, create, and be inspired.”
