Welcome, Adrian. Any relation to the poet of the same name?

Hi Pongo, regretfully not. I only found out of his exisatance when I decided to google myself, just to find that there is a very famous poet with the same name. Oh well, you cant win them all. How are you doing?

I'm doing all right. One of the reasons I use my middle initial in my byline is that there are a number of other writers with more or less the same name as me. (At least one of them uses the same middle initial, but what he writes is very different from my work.)

Welcome, Adrian!
Pongo, I'm in the same position. There are many Jennifer Browns out there, and some of them writers. So I use my middle name.

Hmm. It never occurred to me to use just my middle name, not my first, or go like J. Robert Lennon. Too late to change now, though.

Oh, when I said I use my middle name I meant I use my full name -- Jennifer Kirkpatrick Brown.

But now that you mention it I wish I had used my middle name. Kirkpatrick Brown. Or J. Kirkpatrick Brown.

Oh well. Too late for me to change, too.

"Pongo" comes from the works of P. G. Wodehouse. Pongo Twistleton is a friend of Bertie Wooster and nephew of the Earl of Ickenham.

Hey, Adrian. Things are great here this morning. Looks like it may be a beautiful autumn day and I don't have to work my my second job today, so I have an afternoon to enjoy with part of my family. May even get some writing done tonight.
Hope things are going well down there in Cape Town. Nice to have you on board.

Re: [Adrian Mitchell] New kid [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, Adrian, I am a writer. I got serious about it in 2007 when I published a feature article in "Capper's Magazine." I submitted a short story about my mother. They cut about half of it, called it a feature article, paid me forty-five dollars, and published it in their magazine which boasts a circulation of 200,000. Needless to say, I was on cloud nine for a few days.
I'm still trying to publish a real piece of fiction or poetry. I'm learning a lot about the craft of writing and meeting a lot of like-minded people along the way. I'll never give up, so I guess that makes me a writer. I hope so, because I sure do like the sound of it.
I assume you are a writer, too? If so, tell us what you like to write. Maybe what you like to read, as well.

Adrian, you can pretty well assume that we're all writers here.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for your reply.
I am a poetry writer, but a novice. I have being writing for about two years, coming from a musician background where I wrote a lot of songs and lyrics.
As I have little experience in the promotion of poetry, I joined this group to learn how to promote my work.
Your experience comes as no surprise Frank. The music industry is even tougher!

That is good to know Pongo. So, how does a man go about getting poetry published?

Re: [Adrian Mitchell] New kid [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, what I do is polish my poetry as well as I can, then send it out to magazines that publish poetry. I get a lot of rejections, of course, but eventually more than half the stuff I write gets published.

Re: [pongo] New kid [In reply to] Can't Post

I left something out of "how to get published." You have to work hard at making your poetry better, no matter how good it already is. I don't know about poetry workshops outside the U.S. (well, I know one in Prague, but that's not much better for you), but there may well be weeklong workshops where you can get a week of mentoring and commentary. At the least, make sure you have a community of fellow poets who can help you find and remedy the problems in your work. And, of course, read all the poetry you can get your hands on.
