Wild Light Poetry Contest -- A prize of $1,000 and publication in the Los Angeles Review will be given for a poem. Deadline is October 15.


William Van Dyke Short Story Prize -- A prize of $1,000 and publication in Ruminate will be given for a short story. Deadline is October 15. 


Creative Nonfiction Essay Contest -- A prize of $1,000 and publication in Creative Nonfiction will be given for an essay on the theme "Mistakes." Deadline is November 1.

Jamaal May: Avoid the Corn Dog Tent 

Jamaal May, this month's blogger-in-residence at the Readings & Workshops blog, advises against reading next to the corn dog tent. "Poetry," he writes, "is an intimate experience that requires attention. A situation where people will accidentally stumble across your poem on their way to the tilt-a-whirl is not ideal."


May offers advice on choosing which gigs to accept, setting a fee, and giving a "not terrible" reading.
