I just registered here and I wanted to say hello.
From Playwright to Novelist
I am a beginning novelist/prose writer after spending 15 years writing plays. I have had some success as a playwright, particularly with a theater company I cofounded in the 90s and being published by a small press, but I am feeling that the realities of making theater in New York City are not meshing with where my muse wants me to go. I am not sure if I am changing my medium forever, but the new play I started last year began to take off when I decided it was a novel instead.
I am interested in making friends and building a community. While I know a lot of people in the theater world, I do not know many people (either here in New York City or elsewhere) who write fiction. My intention for the rest of 2013 is to find a writing group that will support and challenge me. I would like to learn about whether it would behoove me to go to grad school (thinking of applying to City College or Hunter here in NYC. I don't want to spend a ton for an MFA) and if self-publishing would be the way to go for me or not.
While my theater work was narrative/story based, it had some experimental leanings. I loved playing with form and structure and surreal imagery. I feel like the fiction I want to write feels like a mashup of fantasy/horror and magic realism (a nod to my Latin American background). I am also very interested in writing about culture, gender and sexuality.
This is all very new to me . . . and very exciting. I look forward to learning more about this community and hopefully being a part of it.
