Re: [motet] Introduce Yourself! [In reply to] Can't Post

My name is Zach, I am a high school student with a number of interesting ideas and incomplete stories so far. I've been writing for as long as I could remember, but never really paid much attention to it until recently. I joined Speakeasy for some helpful advice and a great environment to meet and befriend others with the same interest in writing as me. I'm still not too sure about this whole experience, but yet again I tend to be cautious about things. I've got little to no credit to my name, but I am still young, and I have a lot of time to achieve the things I want to. That's all for now, and I hope to hear from some of you.

Welcome, Zach.

One bit of gratuitous advice: Don't major in creative writing when you get to college. Find a line of work that can support your writing in reasonable comfort, just in case you don't wind up making a living from writing.

Re: [motet] Introduce Yourself! [In reply to] Can't Post

As a longtime member of about ten minutes, I decided it was time that I introduced myself. My user name is Cecil which doesn't reflect my real name in the least. I just always liked the name Cecil.

When I was growing up we lived in a little two bedroom trailer right outside of Savannah, Georgia. A place called Ogeechee Farms. The coolest kid in the neighborhood was a guy named Cecil. Typical bad boy. Drove a brand new Camaro and all the girls crazy. I wanted to be him so bad I couldn't stand it. That was 1968.

A scant 45 years later and I find myself medically retired and bored out of my mind. So, after cleaning out the closets and selling all my junk on ebay, cleaning the stove so well that I refuse to let anyone use it and seriously contemplate buying my third car of the past four months, my wife finally shoved me into my office and told me not to come out until I've written the great American novel.

So, where do I go from here?

Re: [cecil] Introduce Yourself! [In reply to] Can't Post

First, is it Sessil or Seessil?

Second, welcome to the monkey house.

And third, you go down through the topics until you find something interesting. You go out to the five and dime -- you and I are old enough to remember five and dimes -- and buy a pad of paper and a cheap fountain pen and start filling up pages. After a while, you look at it and see where it's going and what it needs to get better.

(If you can't find a five and dime, go online and get a few pads of Rhodia paper -- it works well with fountain pen ink -- and buy a couple of cheap fountain pens on eBay.)

I wouldn't go so far as crazy. Poor judgement at the worst. By posting your work on your blog you drastically lower your chances of anyone else being willing to publish it.

And welcome to Speakeasy, from Kingston Springs!

Just want to do an intro. I am new to this format so my replies may take some time. My success in creative writing is only a dream away. This seems like a great place to learn some techniques, make some friends and stimulate the mind.
Thanks

Hi Karen, it's nice to meet you, too. Welcome to the forum. I too have some poems and stories I'd like to put in a book. I hope it doesn't take a lot of money to get them into a book. I'm trying to get some of them published in magazines and reviews first, hoping that they will get enough attention that a publisher will put up the money needed to put them into a book. I know what you mean about loving to write. I started late but I'm very glad I did. Have you submitted some of your work to magazines?
