Hi!	Can't Post

Hey, I'm TDR. I enjoy going by my initials, apparently. I'm currently in college, still working on my undergrad. I joined because I need some guidance in my next college steps. I need to transfer to a reputable school, but right now moving not an option so I'm looking into finishing my BA online. The only place I have found so far is SNHU (Southern New Hampshire University) but I'm really unsure about going there because of possible negatives from getting an online degree. I'm also unsure of whether to go into a creative writing degree, or English/Lit. I went to bad public schools and feel completely under read.

I also would like to meet more writers. I mostly write poetry, and some fiction and non-fiction here and there. I've been writing for the last two to three years, because I got negative reviews in grade school about my style and gave up. I'm currently unpublished, but I'm going to start working on correcting that.

Have you considered a low-residency program? I know Goddard College has one for bachelors' degrees, and they even have a program in creative writing.

However, I wouldn't really recommend a degree in writing. At some point you'll need to get a job, and a writing degree won't exactly put you on the fast track. In your place, I would read everything I could get my hands on -- especially old works, classics, which form the foundation of our literature -- and take as many writing courses as possible, and major in something that will make it possible to find work that will support the writing. (Plumbing is good for that.)

The problem is I'm so far along (taken a lot of college classes trying to figure out what to do); I don't have time for taking extra writing classes if I switch my degree around. I asked my current English professors and they don't think I am quite ready to be able to write professionally, they say I need more time to learn styles and such. And to be honest, I'm not very interested in doing else besides writing. I've tried medical programs, and other degrees that should get you a job and they absolutely do not interest me.

I noticed in other posts that you go to Goddard for their MFA program, correct? How do you like it there?

To be precise, I went to Goddard. Graduated in '98. I liked it a lot, but the low-res model isn't for everyone. And Goddard is much more art-oriented than professional, although there is a required teaching practicum, which might help you get adjunct work. Although I know some Goddard graduates who make a lot of money, it isn't from writing.
