Out of town guests this month? Send them on their way with our City Guide by author T Cooper. He provides a detailed tour of the Big Apple's bookstores and reading series, plus tips about the very best coffee shops for writing. Your guests will be happily entertained for hours. (New Yorkers will pick up some tips, too!)

2011 is nearly over--but if you resolved to get your writing out there this year, there is still time to keep your promise to yourself. Dozens of writing contests have December and January deadlines, and several are of special interest to NYC writers:

Two Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowships are reserved for writers under 30 living in the five boroughs. Deadline: December 22. Entry Fee: $12

Bronx Council on the Arts BRIO Awards provides grants of $3,000 each to writers of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction who reside in the Bronx. Winners must complete a one-time public service activity. Deadline: January 28. No entry fee.
