Finally getting serious. Can't Post

Hello everyone! My name is Erica. I've been subscribing to Poets&Writers and perusing this board for two years, but I'm finally determined to get serious about writing.

I have copy editing experience and have written a couple of things for a neighborhood newspaper, on top of random stuff in my day jobs. I also write short stories, and have started a novel. Not a strong resume, I know, but I'm hoping to change that.

I'd love to hear from others, particularly when it comes to how you really got started writing for a living. Or is that still a dream? I'd love to get suggestions for great resources for writers, too.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Erica

Re: [EricaP77] Finally getting serious. [In reply to] Can't Post

I actually wrote for a living when I worked for a magazine, and later when I worked for a newspaper as a staff writer (not a reporter). A grand total of almost two years. I've been writing and (at least occasionally) publishing since some time in the Seventies.

Cruise around the boards for a bit, and you'll find some excellent resources right here. Welcome, Erica.

Hi Erica: I started to focus on writing when I left my tax litigation practice to edit a tax magazine. Then I began to focus on my creative writing when I left the job at the magazine to pursue an MFA.

As far as great resources for writers, you have arrived at one! Any local independent bookstores can be great, too.

Welcome, Erica. I would love to write for a living, but fiction. So right now, I'm just writing. Good luck to you!

Hi Erica,

I totally identify with you. My first post is above/Sunday night. I tried once before. Spent a whole
year. Sold several personal essays and won one local newspaper (Boston) short story. Then got
a 'on spec' from Boston Magazine and freaked. Ran and redid my resume, got a job, a paycheck,
and forgot about writing seriously for a long time.
Oh, I kept writing and published one poem I was paid $5 for and some professional pieces (I'm a social
worker/psychotherapist)
I have finished a pretty ok short story and I don't know where to send it. The market has changed so radically
since my college days.
So tonight instead of writing I decided to go on-line and try to find some venues.
Good luck. To both of us.Claire
