Hello All: I am married with an 11 year old boy. I've been working on a non-fiction book called Castles and Ruins, about Ireland, (where I lived as a child), about my mother, also a writer, who died in 1972, and my family (then) as we reckoned with the loss. My family (now), returned to Ireland for 2 long trips recently, which inspired the travelouge/memoir piece that became Castles and Ruins. I've published essays in periodicals in this area, written for local newspapers, and attended the Squaw Valley Conference back before I was married. Between journals, an unpublished novel, and drafts of my current book, I've probably written over a million words. Yet my WEAK area is self promotion, the time it takes in between all the OTHER things I must attend to besides writing. And of course it also takes guts to endure the rejections that are going to come. It used to be that all one had to do was write a good book! Or even a crap book! Agents and publishers took care of the rest... Those days are surely gone, unless one is Zadie Smith. So I'm looking for tips and support on executing the job of self-marketing as swiftly and painlessly as possible. My current goal is to attend a writer's conference in the tri-state area or near it sometime this summer, and am looking, also, to hear anyones recommendations regarding conferences and the whole process. Also looking for support for the long, arduous and sweaty road of wrapping up a book.
