New to P and W Can't Post

Greetings from Maine!
I am finishing a novel I started many years ago. I stopped writing to raise three teenagers as a single mom, and now, for the first time in my life, I have the chance, i.e., no job or parenting pressures, to work on the book.

I have an MFA in Creative Writing from the Stonecoast Writing Program at the University of Southern Maine, and post-graduation, still need work on craft.
I have a non-fiction book to my credit, about microbrewed beer, and the novel's setting is in a brewpub, so that part is fun.

What I am seeking from P & W is support and information, if you are willing to share it, about how to organize myself to do fiction writing part of the time, and do the administrative stuff like getting pieces submitted, contests entered, queries tracked, and most importantly, where to find grants to apply for.

Great to be here!

Kate

Greetings, Kate!

And you'll find that you keep working on craft until you're dead.

Welcome, Kate. Part or full time, it's always a balancing act and there's a different formula that works for everyone. Like anything, it's mostly a matter of setting priorities and sticking to them (as simple as that may sound).

Brewpub. Hmm, I sense a need to go do some fieldwork right now, too....

Re: [katecone] New to P and W [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Kate: I'm also new to this forum so thought I would say hello from Sag Harbor NY. I have an 11 year old boy and have been working on a non-fiction book called Castles and Ruins, about Ireland, (where I lived as a child), about my mother, a writer named Deborah Love, who died in 1972, and my family (then) as we reckoned with the loss. My family (now), returned to Ireland for 2 long trips recently, which inspired the travelouge/memoir piece that became Castles and Ruins. I've published essays in periodicals in this area, written for local newspapers, and attended the Squaw Valley Conference back before I was married.

Between journals, an unpublished novel, and drafts of my current book, I've probably written over a million words. Yet my WEAK area is self promotion, and the time it takes. And the guts. It used to be that all one had to do was write a good book! I'm really looking for tips and support on executing the job of self-marketing as swiftly and painlessly as possible. My current goal is to attend a writer's conference in the tri-state area or near it sometime this summer, and am looking, also, to hear anyone's recommendations regarding conferences and the whole process.

Hi Kate:

Thanks for your reply I was so interested to hear about your book and I'd love to chat. You are correct btw, super sleuth! I tried to send you a separate pvt. message but it said I wasn't authorized to view the Main Index.. Any tips? Anyway, I'm trying to figure it out, and when I do I'll reply in full to your nice note.

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on picking up your manuscript again--it's exhilirating, isn't it?

In terms of grants for writers, I would definitely suggest checking out http://www.fundsforwriters.com.
