Speakeasy log in/registration changes Can't Post

At long last, we'll be unifying the sign-in functions for the Speakeasy and the rest of the site. I'm hoping to flip the switch on it at the end of this week. Once that happens, the Speakeasy sign-in page will be re-routed to the main pw.org sign-in page. The goal is to have one sign-in that gives users access to both the Speakeasy and pw.org at the same time.

I think I have all of the bases covered to make this as smooth as possible. Here are the various cases and how they'll work:

  1. New Registrations
New users will register through pw.org and gain access to both the Speakeasy and pw.org. Both the Speakeasy and pw.org will be checked to make sure the e-mail address and user name aren't already used.
  2. Users with Two Separate Accounts
Users who already have both a Speakeasy account and a pw.org account will be able to sign in with their pw.org account, go to their My P&W page, and link that account to their existing Speakeasy account. They will be required to provide the Speakeasy account's user name and password.
  3. Users with a pw.org Account Only
Users who have already registered through pw.org, but not in the Speakeasy, will be able to automatically create a matching Speakeasy account from their My P&W page. The same precautions will be used to ensure that the user name/e-mail address haven't been used already.
  4. Users with a Speakeasy account, but no pw.org Account
Users who have registered with the Speakeasy, but have not registered through pw.org, will be able to log in using their Speakeasy user name and password and automatically create the matching pw.org account. Again, this assumes that the user name and password haven't been used.
  5. Recovering a Speakeasy Account From a New Registration
Let's assume you could have been in number 4, above, but didn't see this until after you'd already registered a new account. You can still link that new account to your old Speakeasy account from your My P&W page as long as you have that Speakeasy account's user name and password.
If you think I've missed a case, feel free to ask me ahead of time, or ask for help if it's already gone live. No matter what, you won't lose access to your existing account on either side. I can always fix things manually if there is a problem.

With the exception of signing in, this modification won't change the way the Speakeasy functions in any way. What it will do is let you use one sign in to access both the Speakeasy and the user-based functions on the rest of the site. From your My P&W page, you'll be able to update your deadline Reminders, list your Speakeasy Private Messages, see Recent Comments on articles, access your database and/or directory listings, and the rest all in one place.

Re: [jason] Speakeasy log in/registration changes [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey, Jason.

Ever since the change, I've been experiencing problems with thread memory. It will say that a thread has new posts, but when I click on the thread, it doesn't take me to them. It simply takes me to the first page of the thread and I have to then click on the last page and look at the dates on the posts to figure out which ones are new.

Not sure if anyone else is having this problem or if it's just an issue with my browser. I have a Mac and use an older version of Safari.

Re: [writerle] Speakeasy log in/registration changes [In reply to] Can't Post

That's odd. The "new posts" information is saved with the account information, so it shouldn't be a browser issue. If it knows you're logged in, it should know which posts are new to you. (Though I have had it forget and tell me everything is new if I haven't been in for a long time. I think it's punishing me for neglect.)

I'll play with it some over the next few days to see if I can figure out what's going on.

Meanwhile, if anyone else experiences the same issue, do please let me know.

Actually, yes, I wasn't going to say anything, but I've had the same thing happen (since the switch).

In fact it just did happen. When I left here last time I marked "all posts read" just in case I was experiencing some sort of dementia. But now most of those same threads are red again.

The same thing is happening to me - having to re-look at old posts. Also, it's taking me three screens to get to the Speakeasy - am I missing a shortcut? Thanks, Elli

I'm having trouble replicating this. Does this happen when you log out and log back in later, or do you have the "Keep me logged in" box checked. Also, does it only happen with "Mark all read", or does it also happen when you just read threads? Lastly, for those who are experiencing this, can you tell me which browser and operating system you're using?

Hopefully, I'll be able to track down the problem and get it taken care of.

Re: [jason] Speakeasy log in/registration changes [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jason,

It seems to be happening randomly. Sometimes, like today, I am only seeing threads marked red which I haven't read. But, yesterday, a lot was marked unread which I had already read. It happens with "mark all read" and just by reading threads.

In fact, this thread (which I had posted in) had even been marked unread.

I use Firefox, Mac OS X version 10.6.6, and log in each time I come (I don't have the "Keep me logged in" box checked.).

I don't save history/log in information on my computer, and the only other thing which has changed for me since this switch is that I used to just "quit" firefox, and my log in information would be removed from PW. Now, I have to specifically "log out" in order to be logged out.

Good luck!

It is random, but frequent. Just now I logged in and this thread, which I've read a dozen times, indicates new posts... Even though I clicked on "mark all read" when I logged off yesterday...

Hi, I don't know if I fit under this category or not. I must have opened an account here a couple of years ago because my email was already on file. I can log in and respond to posts but can't access my mailbox or look up other posters. Is there a solution to this crisis?

Hi Elizabeth,

Welcome back!

I don't know the answer to that but Jason probably will. Click on his name and send him an email explaning your problem. It might be an easy fix but he's the person who would know best.

Or not! My messaging limitation won't let me send a message either. Perhaps he will notice my forlorn little post. :)

Re: [jason] Speakeasy log in/registration changes [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello:
I registered today. I tried to use Maggie and mg to find they were taken. The system accepted mag and I completed the process.

this evening I attempted to post something in the ghostwriting thread in sending work out. In preview mode, the post showed the signature of Margaret Phillips, not me, Marilyn Gelman. I sent a second post out saying the previous one was not from Margaret.

The second post is there, the first one never made it.

Help.
