hello Can't Post

Hi, I'm new to the speakeasy and wanted to say hello. I've looked around in the postings and see there's a lot of good info on everything related to writing and publishing. Great to be here. I'm a fiction writer and poet. I've focused more on fiction since getting an MFA at Naropa in 2007. You can see some of my published fiction and poetry on my website at www.kathyconde. I look forward to hearing what you have to say and to contributing to the conversation when I can.

Thanks. It's the first time I've participated in a forum, and I'm intrigued by what I've seen in recent posts. The one thing that is strange to me is not being able to respond to you by name, rjko. :)

Thank you Robert! Now I see it. Shows my inexperience with forums. I would like to ask a question, and I guess asking it here might work. Most of the users use a username that is different from their street names. My question is why. And my other question is does that mean they don't want to be addressed by the name they use outside the forum.

For my part: years ago I picked a user name that's like a login name. I think some people are shy or wary.

Re: [KathyConde] hello [In reply to] Can't Post

well, first: hi kathy and welcome.

and i go by jitall on the handle thing but am not actually anonymous. i am not sure why i didn't use my name as my user name.... probably something to do with privacy.

some people post here in actual anonymity, so if i know their actual names, i do not use them. if their name is listed right here though, on the side bar or sig, you can call them by either.

Re: [jitall] hello [In reply to] Can't Post

I have a very common name, and it took me very little time on the Interwebs to learn that I needed some other, less common, name as a login.

Most people here know who I am, under whatever name.

Re: [pongo] hello [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks to all of you for helping me get oriented. After thinking about it, it made sense that some people might want to post anonymously (I hadn't really thought of that). Now I see that sometimes people have their real names listed as well, and I'll assume that if they don't then they want anonymity. I haven't read forums like this before, so it was something that took me by surprise. I've looked at a few forums today and this one really looks great!

If you are new to Internet forums and discussion boards, don't take this one as typical. I have a lot of experience with lists/boards/discussion groups. This one is remarkably civil, engaging, thought-provoking, and professional. Smart, savvy, friendly people.

Thanks for affirming this Margaret. That's the impression I have gotten. And such a great wealth of experience and info across the spectrum.

Welcome, Kathy, and ditto to what Margaret says about the Speakeasy. I've come to greatly value the friendships here.
