Anyone else out there wait listed and frustrated? I feel like we're all holding our breath and waiting for someone else to move first, lol.

You're telling me! There's a *very* small number of people standing in between me and full funding at my dream school. I'm about as pent up as you'd imagine, lol.

Rejected by Utah, 3/25, via email in response to my inquiry. Was also told that "all acceptances and waiting list notifications have gone out via phone." The rejection letters are only awaiting signatures to be sent out. Sorry to bring bad news, but I thought people would rather know.

Anybody get in to Florida State? Rejected? Haven't heard anything either way from them and just wondering if they've sent any letter, acceptance or otherwise, out yet?

My online status just says complete/ready for review or something like that...

I heard of at least one acceptance to FSU via phone back in February.

Personally, I haven't heard back from them. My online status is the same it has always been. I don't know if that means they are still waiting on responses from those who have been accepted or if they are just dragging their feet with rejections.

While any generalization will stomp on the exceptions, it's safe to say that schools expend effort to notify admits on a timely basis, and relinquish rejects to the lengthy bureaucracy of official, snail mail notification. Not to complain, as it is not in their interest to respond to rejections in a timely (and unequivocal) manner, especially considering that the average department admits a dozen and rejects hundreds. On the applicant's side of things, of course, one wishes that the process were a little less impersonal. What are ya gonna do, eh?

Still haven't heard from Binghamton. Anyone?

Nope, nothing from Binghamton. I have heard, however, that James Franco has applied to pretty much everywhere in fiction and he's been accepted to most everywhere.

LOL yes I read that he was "interested" in PhD programs after completing his MFA from Columbia. I bet that programs are going ape &%$# over the PR that such a high profile students would give them. Read his piece in Esquire. I'm wondering if everything he does at this point is performance art, as he claims his stint in soap operas is.

I talked to the graduate secretary at Binghamton this morning, who said decisions were made last week and letters are in the mail. No word on how accepted students are being notified.

That's strange, as in previous years gradcafe shows that those who emailed queries received definite responses as to whether or not they were accepted. I'm always suspicious when I receive a generic "decisions have been made and responses are in the mail," as this seems to indicate that someone does not want to tell me that I've been rejected. But I haven't seen *any* Binghamton activity on gradcafe (save an apocryphal MA admission reported way too early), and the program is big enough that one would suspect that at least *some* of the admitted (overall English PhD, not just CW) would report the news on gradcafe.

He's in at Florida State and Utah? I wonder if he has to pay for his degree, as he never would have made the cut if he were not a celebrity. I wonder if he had to pay for his MFA at Columbia. I can't imagine what he'd be like as a teacher.

I don't know how good my info is on where James Franco got in, but I have heard that he got into Utah, Denver, and FSU, offering to pay his way at all of them (seriously, do you think he's going to teach freshman comp? I'm not sure it's exactly an insult that he's not funded since from what I've heard he's offered to pay.) Also, I'm not a huge fan of his Esquire story, but the guy has an MFA from Columbia in CW, an MFA in Film from NYU, possibly a low-res MFA, and graduated from UCLA, so clearly the guy is interested in learning, so I'm not sure it's fair to say that he only got into these schools because of his fame. Yeah, I've heard this as well. I also read his story in Esquire. It wasn't anything special. Boringly competent, safe, and nothing unique or interesting in the style.

Well, good on him. After reading this thread and then checking out his Esquire story, I gotta say, yeah, "competent" is about the best word for it. I wouldn't say he *doesn't* deserve to be there, but there are probably at least a dozen even more deserving people out there for every spot he got offered. Guess it's hard for a school to turn down someone who doesn't need their financial support. And can you say BIG FAT ALUMNI FUND DONATION?

At least this guy and his academic pursuits aren't a complete joke/waste of everyone's time like Rivers Cuomo's stint at Harvard. Amirite? Eh? Complete joke, that guy. Anyway, if the rumors about him taking a spot at Yale are true, that's nothing but good news for us CWers still waiting for news.

I don't think it means anything for people waiting for news - my impression (again, this is based on rumors) is that since he would have been paying his own way, he wasn't taking up any funded spots, meaning his self-funded admission would have been in addition to the already accepted, funded slots.

Yeah, sic, I actually could get behind Franco taking an unfunded spot at a writing PhD if he'd make some big fat alumnus donations to the English Dept there. Especially if it's a public school. But, alas, he's going to Yale, it seems. They don't need any more money. Or maybe they do.

I got rejected from GSU. Haven't gotten a letter, but it was on their site. If you haven't heard, then best of luck to you.
