Intro post Can't Post

Hallo, I'm Liz. Joined the forums half on a whim, and half after realizing I'm in need of "writerly" talk. I'm a grad student, so I can get all the academic discussion I want, but I'm not in an MFA, so the creative writing moments are few and far between. In between the classes, conferences, and papers (and those little things called day jobs) I write. Poetry mainly , prose occasionally, and I love toying with those textnovel things! Say what you want about online life, they can be fun for a quick ego boost and forcing oneself to just get a draft done. Trying to publish here and there, but I find the reading fees prohibitive, as it's all shoestrings here, so it's a limited effort for now.

So, yes, I'll be playing around on a few boards here and there. Say hi sometime, and let's talk! :)

Liz

Don't pay them. Except for contests, where an entry fee is standard, very few legitimate markets charge reading fees (there's a handful of legitimate markets which do charge reading fees, eg Glimmer Train, and there's extensive discussion about that here). Try duotrope for listings of legit markets which don't charge reading fees.

Hey to Junior, Pongo, and yourself :) And thanks for the tip on the fees - always wondered if there was something fishy about that or if I was just cheap. Still, it's good to know. Word of mouth is a wonderful thing...

Hi, Liz. I'm relatively new here, as well. I'm currently in academia (loosely defined, given our tenuous job situations), so if you want to talk about trying to balance academic and creative writing endeavors, feel free to email me (off list most likely, so that we don't force anyone to read through the comments who isn't interested).

There are at least a few people here who have some academic affiliation as well as being writers. If someone wanted to open a topic on the subject, I suspect there would be some interest in it.

Great; I'll leave that up to whoever wants to start one, if someone in fact does.

That's a great idea - I think there's a lot of room to take on the weird meetings/splits between academic and creative writing. I'm open to PM's on the matter, but I'll be making a new topic for those that may want to throw their cents in.

Where would you recommend I place a general academic topic, - think it'd be ok in the intro area? Or is that a petition-the-mods thing? We have MFA activity, but one for those of us who are in other disciplines would be nice.
