Hello! Writing my first novel & glad to be among writers Can't Post

Hi everyone, my name is Celeste, I'm 25 years old and currently writing my first novel. I finished a graduate program in journalism in New York last spring and moved back to California, my hometown, in August to pursue fiction writing for a year. I've given myself until the end of summer to complete my book, and while I don't have an income or a car during this time, I'm very blessed to have a family willing to take me back in so I can work on my book full-time. I know that time is the biggest gift a writer can have and I'm working hard to make the most of it. One of my professors from graduate school told me about Poets & Writers and it's now my main source for information on writing and publishing. I've never been part of a forum before but I'm looking forward to conversations on writing, and meeting and supporting fellow writers.

A little bit about my background...I was an avid writer as a child and always had the goal of publishing a novel, but once I hit college, I was sure journalism was my calling. I saw it as an honorable (and paying) profession that would expose me to situations, people, and places I would probably otherwise never come into contact with. I chose to pursue an M.S. in Journalism because I saw it as a way to be thrust into the world. It was--but during my time in graduate school, I realized that I was saving all of my reporting notes for fiction stories and every interesting person I interviewed immediately turned into a character for a story.

After graduation, I convinced my parents to let me move home for a year and work on a novel. I had an idea I'd been sitting on for years and decided it was time to make it happen. I'm now about halfway through the book, and halfway through my year off, and the book is slowly but steadily taking shape. So far, I've set a goal of about 1500 words per day, but it has been a daily battle. As much as I love what I'm doing and as attached as I am to my story, I'm also terrified by it. Up until now, writing a novel has been a dream. Now it's a goal--and that means that it's not sitting in the back of my mind anymore, but sitting right in front of me and staring me in the face. Sometimes I think I'm crazy for doing this but I'm trying to be in the moment with my writing every day and not let the "bigger picture" of it get to me. Right now, I'm polishing and re-writing the first 50 pages of my novel to enter into a contest. I'm also working on some short stories to send out in the coming months.

I hope that by joining this forum and reading what others are going through and how they're getting through each day of writing will inspire me to finish this book and work through any problems I have. I look forward to meeting some of you and please feel free to reach out to me anytime. See you in the forums!
