Re: [germericanqt] Waiting [In reply to] Can't Post

Just received an email from Brown.

Subject: Brown University Graduate School Admissions Process

The first line reads, "Thank you for applying for admission to Brown University Graduate School." I'll admit I almost threw up a bit at my desk when I read that, but the rest of the email is just to inform candidates that they are reviewing apps and "will soon prepare decision letters. Offers of admission will be sent via postal mail."

I hope Mr. Postman will soon bring good news in a fat envelope postmarked out of Providence.

I got that too and remembered that I applied to brown, then proceeded to have a laughing attack.

Re: [lesliee] Waiting [In reply to] Can't Post

This is where I think the response times for last year helped me--Brown typically doesn't notify until the second week of March (although some students hear from them earlier and do an interview, apparently) so when I got that email, I wasn't expecting anything more than "your application is complete."

I didn't get that e-mail either, but it might be because I sent an e-mail asking if my application was complete and got one back saying "yes, now go away" (basically). I'm definitely interested in the significance (if any) of that email...

Don't think it's significant (sorry!). Kinda feels like we're reading tea leaves in the recent posts. I got an e-mail from them stating they had everything and forwarded info to the fellowship commitees. They didn't ask me to apply because I had included a letter stating I had already applied and just needed them to foward info (as the fellowship sites said to do).

Did anyone else hear from Purdue regarding missing application materials? Someone from the English grad office (NOT the writing program) emailed me today asking for a few things. Well, she didn't ask as much as state that certain items were absent. Just curious if anyone else received a similar notification.

I applied to Wash U and didn't receive this email, though I'm not sure I checked the appropriate box (and I'm not sure my gpa is good enough to receive any additional fellowships from Wash U even if I were accepted). Did you apply in fiction or poetry?

Re: [v1ctorya] Waiting [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree completely that there is absolutely no significance to that email. The reason why I brought it up was just that, as all of us are well aware, ANY bit of correspondence from a school you applied to increases your heart rate and makes you think, "oh bollocks! Here comes some bad news."

I knew they received everything I sent in, as I got three emails at different times stating so. I thought the email today was pretty unncessary in terms of alleviating any of crippling agony that comes along with waiting. If anything, it only added to my (what will be) 3 month freak out.

Re: [PJwave1] Waiting [In reply to] Can't Post

I got a huge envelope from Oregon last week. It was a letter saying they'd received my materials and a large packet of housing materials. Why on earth would they send information on housing to people who haven't been accepted?

I told myself I wouldn't start to freak out until February. I'm trying to keep to that schedule. Although, tonight might end up a pizza night to alleviate worries. You just can't worry with hot pizza available.

Re: [edfeasley] Waiting [In reply to] Can't Post

I applied in fiction, and I checked the boxes on the application saying that I would be applying to those fellowships (one is for women, the other is a diversity fellowship). I am guessing it is just a formality and they probably haven't even read my sample yet. Obviously it would be nice to think that it means something, but I doubt it. If you haven't gotten it you probably did not say you were going to apply to them on your apps, or you have already sent your stuff in, and don't need a reminder.

Thanks, ka2009. I'm almost certain I didn't check those boxes....

In slightly related news, last night I saw Carolyn Forché give a reading at Wash U. She's a powerful reader.

Sorry, pernicus, they send that to everyone. I got it last month (presumably because I applied earlier than you). Last year a lot of people got excited and disappointed after getting that envelope mid-decisions process.

Re: [sara e.g.] Waiting [In reply to] Can't Post

minnesota managed to lose all three of my recommendation letters, so my recommenders had to email them to the program coordinator, which meant my application (CNF) didn't get added to the "reading pile" until today. when i asked the coordinator whether this would affect my chances of being admitted, since the notification dates on seth's blog for the past two years indicated CNF people would start hearing at the end of january, this is what she said (copied from an email):

"No, your chances of being admitted to the program are not compromised. We notify fellowship nominees in January, not regular admits. Fellowship nominees are Graduate School-wide. A fellowship is not the same as offer of admission that comes with a Teaching Assistantship. Admission offers are sent in during the month of February."

if this is true, i'm assuming the poetry person who was accepted today received a fellowship as well... the point being that there is still hope for poetry applicants (and the rest of us) who don't hear from minnesota right now.

deep breaths...

What fellowships? I don't remember there being university wide fellowships.
