Hello
I'm waitlisted at NYU in fiction. I was wondering 2 things:
1) Is anybody planning on turning down NYU (fiction)?
2) Did everyone get waitlisted on the same day? I found out by email on March 14.

I don't know if fiction is like poetry, but I know NYU wait-listed in two groups for poetry. One went out on the 14th, and the other on the 20th. Hope that helps.

I had a theory that there were two waitlist tiers and that I was on the lower one.... According to Seths' blog, NYU accepted people on the 20th. My theory is that they notified the lower ranked waitlisters on the 14th, but held on to the higher ranked names until the 20th. That way, if an accepted applicant turned down an offer of admission immediately on the 20th, NYU could just go down the list and "accept" someone they had been planning to waitlist (so they would just think they were accepted, and would never know they had been about to be waitlisted). So that would mean the waitlisters notified on the 20th were higher ranked. Does that make sense? I think I'm obsessing about this too much....

I have no idea, but I totally sympathize with your madness. If it makes you feel any better, I received my waitlist notification on the 20th, but it came via e-mail before any calls were made. I am wondering if anyone who is waitlisted for poetry or fiction has gotten off yet at NYU...

I also received my waitlist letter at NYU on the 14th. It's the only semi-positive response I've gotten so far (rejected everywhere else and waiting for UNLV) so I'm also pretty anxious about it.

Did anyone else who was rejected from NYU receive a letter asking you to apply to the Draper Program in Humanities and Social Thought? It struck me as kind of odd, an implied, "We don't particularly like your writing, but we would still like your $50,000," and I'm wondeing if they send them out to every rejected applicant. Also, their deadline for Fall admission is July 1, which I read as a catch-all for students who had been rejected from their first-choice programs. Just curious.

I got this too, and I agree with you completely. It's the old bait-and-switch. It's similar to what Brooklyn did, but at least those people were offered something in the general field of English/literature. NYU might as well have invited me to apply for a program in organic chemistry.

I got this last year too, and felt the same. Then some months later I happened to meet and talk with a Draper faculty member and I mentioned this letter and referred to it as "ambulance chasing." While she laughed, she said that the offer is not sent to everyone the MFA program rejects, but rather to a top layer -- I guess those just below the waitlist level. If this is any small comfort.

Haha. Brooklyn didn't offer me anything. In fact, they sent me a preemptive rejection. I wish I had saved it. It was something along the lines of "Though we have not yet finalized out acceptances, we'd like you to know you won't be among them. You will receive your official rejection letter next week." Wow. I can hardly wait. Better than Hunter though, who still won't give me any indication of my app. status. I would like to motion that we change this thread's title to "The Manhattan Project," to better reflect the diabolical secrecy and mystery that shroud the MFA application process.

I'm working on assembling my 'list' - I won't be leaving the NYC area for personal reasons. Considering how selective and poorly funded the NYC programs are (I found this out the hard way last time around), I will be considering schools withing, say, 100 miles of NYC.

So they aren't exactly NYC programs, but how about:

Rutgers Newark
Rutgers Camden
SUNY Stony Brook Southampton
Adelphi
Long Island University

Any thoughts on these programs, or schools to add to this list?

I am seriously considering a nonfiction MFA at one of the CUNYs.

Here's my criteria:

-classes available at night/weekends (I work f/t and can't afford to stop)

-my interest is long-form, narrative book-writing (as opposed to memoir)

Matt,

I'm about to start an MFA at Queens College in fiction. It's a new and promising program, with an excellent faculty that seems willing to bend over backward to make it a great experience for the students. Classes are in the late afternoon or evening, and the mood is exciting and ambitious. I'm thrilled to be there.

Queens doesn't have an official nonfiction track, but since I've got a dual fascination with fiction and nonfiction I may attempt a hybrid MFA to cover both genres. I have to discuss it further with the director, Nicole Cooley, but she seems amenable to working with me on this. So I recommend you consider Queens, since it seems likely that they'll have a nonfiction track at some point soon, and certainly the more interest from potential students, the more likely it is that will happen.

There's also the Writer's Institute at CUNY's Graduate Center, which is a non-degree program, but seems terrific - definitely worth a look. http://www.cuny.edu/creativewriting

For anyone in the NY area that is interested in the CUNY Queens College MFA, the program is having an open house and launch party on Monday, November 10th from 6-8. I know when I was applying, the open houses I went to were useful in showing the kind of personalities I'd be working with.

Just a note for those considering NYC schools to keep an eye on our economic crisis. They're talking of raising tuition rates for all SUNY and CUNY schools, subway hikes, taxing clothes, soda, music, movies, etc., etc.. .

as if it wasn't expensive enough to live here.

I'm trying to find out more about City College's program, especially in fiction. They have a 9 credit requirement in "Critical Practice" courses (aside from workshops, literature, etc), but don't really explain it is. Anyone know what this might be?

As some of you may recall, I work at CUNY (in the Central Office, where I'm in the Office of Academic Affairs). I thought I'd mention a new cross-campus, cross-genre reading series that's been put together by the four MFA programs (Brooklyn, City, Hunter, and Queens). It's called the "Turnstyle" series, and its first event is scheduled for Monday, February 9. Click here for the details on that particular evening. Did anyone else apply to the New School for Fiction? They extended their deadline and I submitted mine the day of the deadline. According to the admissions dept, I should have received a student number so I can track my application online. Did anyone else get an id number and instructions on how to track your submissions?

I applied as well to New School, Molly. The only things I really received were, "thanks for applying!" and:

"This is to confirm that we have received your application, and we look forward to reviewing it. Thank you!"

I don't think I got any student ID number or anything. It's looking like we'll just have to wait it out and see the results in the mail.

Hi Molly
I applied to New School before Christmas and they sent a letter confirming they received the application. The letter has a login ID for their system so you can check the progress of your application. So far my number hasn't worked and I ended up calling them to check they had everything they needed from me. It took over 3 weeks for that letter to arrive so I wouldn't get worried, there is possibly just a backlog. Maybe just call the admissions department directly and ask that they have everything if you are concerned? I was glad I did because I was missing something, and given my login wasn't working I would have never known.

I applied to the New School and got that same letter. I had no idea they extended their deadline. Is that a good sign or a bad sign? A sign at all? I'm wigging out with all the waiting.

I'm a little annoyed with The New School anyway considering they MOVED their admissions office over winter break and didn't tell anyone until that nice little mass email I got AFTER I mailed my things in. Awesome. I resent everything but when I checked my application status online, they received all the things I sent first to the WRONG address so...no harm no foul but way to give me a heart condition, New School. Jesus.

Still, all I've gotten is a "thanks for applying." Nothing about moving, nothing about a deadline, nothing about an ID number. I did apply by the deadline, but not early. So I imagine it's just backed up?
