I'm trying to decided between Antioch and Bennington.

I understand both programs are very good.

After completely giving up hope and moving on with life, I received a call from Antioch this morning. Someone canceled and they offered me the open spot. I'll be going for fiction starting this June. I'd only applied to a small number of schools and had already started putting together a list over twice-as-long for the next round. I am so happy/excited/relieved that I will be focusing on my writing at Antioch rather than assembling submission packets again. I could have done without the emotional rollercoaster but I'll still take this outcome.

My story is similar to alansc's.

Just yesterday, I received a letter from Antioch telling me that all the slots for this year had been filled, and it was unlikely that a spot would open up for me.

I was waitlisted there about a month ago, and getting this letter was heartbreaking because Antioch was my last shot at getting into an MFA program this year.

Well, today, the director called me to ask if I had already made plans to attend another school. When I told him no, he told me someone just declined the school's offer and I was next up on the waitlist. I was elated and accepted right there on the spot.

So if you're still waiting and already looking to next year like I was, just wanted you to know all hope is not lost. Good luck.

Yeah, I have heard stories of people getting into programs even up until the beginning of June. That's amazing!

I definitely plan to post something on the Speakeasy next year in response to people who are freaking out in the middle of February because they haven't heard anything yet. Granted, I was one of those myself, but in the end it turned out to be pointless torture on myself and everyone around me.

hello. just thought i would let people know that some schools, at least one, the University of Utah has two application deadlines. the first in December is for funding, and the second by April 15 without funding. when i called them in early April they said they had already sent acceptances and rejections for the first round of applicants. that had never even occurred to me that they would have a second session! so, i applied to the U of Utah MFA poetry and Utah State for an MA Creative Writing emphasis.

i just heard from USU that i got accepted! i am still waiting on the U of Utah and would rather have an MFA. but the MA from USU would give me time to read and write. from there i would still need an MFA or a PhD. will see what happens. :)

Fellow Utahn,

Congrats on the USU acceptance! I'm sure you already know, but Logan is a great town. I've heard that Michael Sowder is a terrific poet as well (but maybe your interest is fiction?).

Anyway, good luck with everything. I've heard that UofU is reluctant to take some of their own, but good luck there as well.

Yes, congrats on USU! I've heard good things about their program.

I've heard it's tricky to get into the U of Utah's programs as well if you're an undergraduate there, but myself and several friends and co-workers are going from their BA in English to either the MFA or the PhD. I had a professor here encourage me to apply to the program in particular. I don't know if that's something that's changing or just anecodotal evidence trying to serve as data, though. ^^

I'm in at Southern Illinois University. No assistantship just yet, but one may be forthcoming, which is good enough for me, so I'm headed to Carbondale for the next three years! Pretty excited, I'm celebrating tonight.

Well, I have finally accepted at a University for the fall, but it has been a long ride and I am not in the program I originally sought. I applied to a lot of good and not so good programs, but I did not get into most. I did get into the MA in Lit. with Creative Writing Option at Central Michigan and the MA in Lit. program at Eastern Michigan. I was a bit disappointed. In early April, I found a film program at American University that was still accepting application. Today I got my acceptance, paid my fee, and accepted my spot there for this fall. This is actually what I wanted to do with my life, so things worked out perfectly.

I suppose this is the appropriate thread to post this on...

I just received word from the grad secretary at SIUC that I have been awarded a fully funded Teaching assistantship! They really came through for me (receipt of my official transcript probably helped) and needless to say I am anxious, nervous, friggin' elated, and would have never thought that this application process would drag out all the way past mid June.

So for all of you out there going into the 2009 Application season, expect the unexpected.

Now I can really celebrate!
