As I was told (and was confirmed by calling UNCG), I wouldn't give up on UNCG yet. They said on their blog they'd be making decisions through April 15, and when I called, they said they sent out a few acceptances and a wave of rejections, and that if you haven't heard yet, you should consider yourself still in the running.

If you want, you can check it out yourself by calling them. They were really nice and up front with me.

Hey Jane Eyre--I think we've been emailing! I turned down Wash U a couple days ago. It made me sad, but I was so enamored of Ohio State. Now there's a wrench in the works, and maybe you're responsible? ;^) I just found out this morning that I got into Minnesota off the wait list.

My dilemma: Minnesota was originally my top choice. I did my undergrad in the Twin Cities and they're a great place to live. I think it's a great program, ideal for my personality. I love Charles Baxter's and Julie Schumacher's writing.

BUT.

I also fell in love w/OSU. Erin McGraw's short stories blew me out of the water. OSU has also been clear from the beginning that they WANTED me. Also, OSU is closer to family. I liked Columbus, and it's cheaper than the Twin Cities. Their graduates have a great publishing track record.

Can anyone weigh in on these two programs for fiction? Structurally, they seem very similar--three years, funded, similar size...

Also--does anyone have any thoughts on going somewhere off the wait list? I wonder if I would feel like they didn't really want me at MN.

Like Jane Eyre, I also have a husband to consider. For me it also has to do with old vs. new--tons of pre-existing friends in Minneapolis.

Sorry, that's a lot of questions. I am completely addled!

I turned down a spot w/full funding at Oregon yesterday. I hope someone from the waitlist hears soon. :)

As for me, I accepted a funded spot at Ohio State this week. A funded spot should open up at Purdue, and a so-far unfunded spot at Montana. Also takes my name off of the Wisconsin waitlist. Good luck to everyone whose process is still in flux.

Hey Samara,

Yes, we have been emailing! That's hilarious (about you getting in at Minnesota) - I declined over the weekend, so it seems likely! It must have been hard to decline at Wash U. Is the OSU stipend competitive with Wash U's stipend offer, or will you be taking less $$$ to go to a program you prefer?

Minnesota's stipend is definitely less than Wash U's, as you must know, but the program director did mention opportunities to increase your stipend by working as a research assistant (in addition to teaching) or teaching over the summer.

I don't know anything about OSU's program, so it's hard for me to offer any kind of comparison. I did really love my visit there - the atmosphere in workshop seemed both comfortable and challenging. Also, Dislocate (the student-run journal) is fantastic. They sent me the current copy and I was really impressed. Any student who wants to can work on it, and they need a lot of help, since they had something like 800 submissions for the last issue.

Where does your husband want to live?

i can say that my workshop professor this term told us that charles baxter is the best teacher she ever had. also, in regards to coming in off of the waitlist, i don't think you should worry about not being wanted. i think it's only a big deal at places that don't equally fund. minnesota obviously want you. otherwise, they'd save the stipend money (and have a big pizza party?).

i don't mean to sound like i'm advocating for minnesota. they're both great programs that i don't know all that much about. there's no wrong decision here.

In the last couple of weeks I declined acceptances to:

-McNeese
-Alaska, Fairbanks

Took myself off the waitlist for:

-Western Michigan
-Arkansas

And accepted:

-West Virginia

while picking myself up after rejections from:

-Oregon
-Michigan
-Cornell
-Alabama

I think she's referring to a new subject within a topic. For instance--how to change "New heading here" to something else. To do so, reply to someone elses post, and you can edit the subject to something new in your reply. Hope this helps.

Beginning at Columbia in the fall, and freed up a spot at UNCG this afternoon! It was a difficult decision...I can't say enough about the faculty and staff at UNCG. Good luck to those staring down the face of April 15th!

Congratulations. Are you the first to formally accept their offer? I'm wait-listed, but have decided on U of AZ, who, between scholarships and TAship stipend, are offering nearly as much as Michener. Austin is a great place to live. I'm jealous! Enjoy!

I'm not really sure who has accepted, declined, or removed themselves from the waitlist at this point. I'm fairly certain that people need to decide by Tuesday though. I'm looking forward to living in Austin. It's a great city.

Congratulations on the University of Arizona program. It sounds like you have a great financial package and will do well there. Good luck with everything.

Yugao! I didn't know very much about the MFA program at the Michener Center (most of my research of programs has been of low-res ones), but I just spent some time checking it out. Now I'm really jealous! It sounds amazing. I wonder if Joy Williams is still on the visiting faculty there?
