Re: [Junior Maas] March Madness [In reply to] Can't Post

J Maas,

What's the film your friend has out?

I never took it as a comment on my talent and it's saddening that your friend did. But it is a comment on my MFA and it has implications on where I go from here. Thanks for the encouragement.

Rejected from Michigan via mail over the weekend (must've arrived March 1?). For fiction. Like you, liamolly, at least got the heads up from Speakeasy. Good luck during this magical month, everyone!

U Mass [In reply to] Can't Post

I regret to inform you all that I am unable to recommend U Mass-Amherst to anyone who has taken a writing class that covers tone.

They weren't even in my top 8, and the wording of that rejection letter still got to me. Who wrote that thing? It was as if they tried really hard to recommend us, but the mediocrity of our work was too powerful. Lol.

I'm in the Midwest. It changed to pending last week, so I knew the rejection letter was on its way.

Re: [Dinosaur] U Mass [In reply to] Can't Post

Dinosaur, I'm in the same boat (in the Midwest as well) and had the exact same reaction to the complete lack of style. Not even worthy of my planned rejection-letter-mobile art therapy project! But I guess if I were dishing out rejections to the masses while trying to concentrate on wooing the favored few, I'd probably direct my energy toward the latter as well. Sucks for those of us in the former category. UMASS was among my top choices, so it was rather sad - worthy of two tequila shots this time (Syracuse only got one!).

Status is still "pending" - I'd say it's going to be a couple weeks before it changes.

2 out, 1 in, 7 to go!

I already ranted about the UMASS letter, but now I'm wondering -- did you guys get a letter from the department, or was yours from the graduate admissions office? Mine was from the latter, which is why, I assume, it was so terribly written...

And for those keeping track... I live in MA, so my letter arrived on Saturday. I think I saw someone post that they got one on Friday -- that must've been an express-mailing!

Now I'm curious...do you guys mind posting a copy of this rejection letter on here?

The one I got from UT Austin was a short and simple read that I quickly deleted out of my mailbox and have since completely forgotten the wording.

You got something from UT Austin? Is that their MA in creative writing or the MFA from the Michener center?

Re: [Junior Maas] March Madness [In reply to] Can't Post

I pressed for an answer from Penn State, my final school, in order that I could make a decision with all the information available. This is part of the answer I received:

Quote
Our program is very small--we admit two people in each genre--and so very competitive. You should also know that due to grad. school guidelines here, we must weigh GRE scores heavily in admissions. This year we could accept 6 total, out of more than 100 applicants. It is quite possible that we will need to make additional offers to writers of non-fiction, but I can't predict how that will go. For now, I can only say that your name was not among the top two.

So, I'm out at Penn State. Funny - I don't have so much as a tickle in my tummy over it.

The Rolling of the Heads Begins at Iowa [In reply to] Can't Post

Iowa letters are out and so am I! Got my rejection today by mail. I live in Iowa City so those of you farther away will have another day or two to wait.

I have to say, not only did I not expect to get in, but I'm also kind of relieved. Makes my April 15 decision that much easier.

Good luck to all!

No problem--I know people are tearing their hair out to hear anything about Iowa. It seems we all applied there.

Letter is dated March 3--so I'm guessing they went out yesterday.

I'd like to think that, but people started receiving michigan letters last week, and I haven't heard a peep. I live 4 hours away...relatively speaking that's pretty close. Who knows. Thanks again!

UMass rejection [In reply to] Can't Post

I finally got my UMass rejection. Both this one and the one from Alabama seem to imply that I am in no way qualified for graduate study of any sort. But with an acceptance elsewhere, I'm not feeling too hurt, just rolling my eyes at how arbitrary this whole process is.

Don't beat yourself up. Alabama is actually a very sought-after program. A lot of people apply....the program has become pretty reputable, especially with the Black Warrior Review and all.

It's not a "fallback school". I thought it was last year.. (I live in Alabama). Turns out I was pretty much way off.
